Ever haul parts that you probably shouldn't have?

Guys got to do what a guys got to do! Especially when you get a good buy on a trunk lid that can run up to $1000 if you can find a good one else where.

 

bought a old toyota 75' toyota corona 4dr that somebody had taken the seats out of and stuffed 3 350 chevy motors in complete plus one in the trunk. best $5 bucks i ever spent for a portable engine storage. i used to tell the guys at the auction i had a toyota with a 350 in it! what a ****ing riot! those old hemi toyota motors are tough.

 

I hauled 2,000 pounds of gravel in the back of my '63 Nova wagon. Its my little pick-em-up truck.

 

Couple trips from San Diego, CA to Portland, OR.

3 complete big block chevy engines with ******s attached and 2 complete Olds aluminum 215 V8's sitting on top of the BB's. Hauled in a then new, late 80's Chevy 1/2 ton rental truck equipped with a w/305 & 700r4. Did I forget to mention the 69 GTO on the car trailer behind me. I didn't think the truck was going to make it over the Siskiyou Mountains. Full throttle till engine starts getting too warm. Pull over, cool, then repeat.

'65 Dodge Dart GT convertible inside a 16' Budget rental box van. The cars back tires were barely inside the van and the whole rear trunk section stuck out. Oh, yea had my v-drive drag boat in tow. Got some funny looks.

 

I see guys doing crazy loads leaving the family auto salvage all the time. But the best so far was my dad bringing home and old metal lathe with 6 foot bed home in his geo metro. Removed front seat and legs from the lathe. Best part was he just didnt want to drive the truck that day.

 

1982 and I had just finished building the SBC for my 56 at work.

Didn't have a garage at home and my Mum had banned me from building it in the house (had previous from building an A series in my bedroom but that is another story....)

So the big day arrived and I had to transport the small block back to home, a journey of about 20 miles. Problem was I had no other transport than the Mini with the built A series...

Now, I am not talking the modern BMW Mini here, I am talking the original little roller skate. So, what is a man to do?

Yup, as already mentioned on other threads take the front seat out and take the engine as a p***enger.

Fitted surprisingly well but made for interesting handling as I had practically doubled the weight of the car.

Probably best not repeated.

Bought a 1930 model A frame at a rod run in ***berland MD. My son picked it (amd me) up at the event and we loaded into the back of his 2000 Jeep Cherokee. We had to fold the back seats down and then strap the farme in. I sat with my back against the front p***engers seat while facing the back of the jeep. This way I kept some weight on the back of the frame while the front of it stuck out the back of the jeep. We then drove it over to my Father In-laws house some 15 miles away and put it in his garage. We sure got some strange looks and a few laughs from the people at the rod run, but HEY it worked A OK.

 

My uncle hauled a renault dalphine int he back of his 72 chevy pickup lol .

not car related but when i was younger my mom drove a diesel 80 cadilac eldorado . Her and Dad took me and 1 of my sisters and my brother down to a dairy farm , we loaded a holstein calf and it rode on our laps in the back seat of the eldorado to bring it home .

Several Jersey calfs on our laps int he back of a 74 blazer ha ha ha.

 

A few years ago,I picked up a complete FE big block,auto box,'60 Galaxy 9 inch rear,steering column and various other bits and pieces.Stuffed it all in the back of my old Ford Granada(European model).It was on it's bump stops all the way home.Poor old car could barely move(1800 cc 4 cyl)!

 

I drove around for 2 weeks with my 454 inside the back of my beater 88 Dodge minivan....

 

Yeah,I once hauled 6 complete 409 engines in the back of my rusty Datsun 510.Had trouble fittin them in so I left the 401 Nailhead behind at the curb.

 

Carried a dismantled 1936 Ivory Calthorpe 500cc motorcycle home about 150 miles in the back seat and boot of a 1959 Hillman Minx sedan once many years ago. Bike was quite a hefty item, similar to BSA and Triumph of the same era, and we had to come over the Blue Mountains in the old Hillman.

Also brought home a Velocette bike frame tied to the roof of a 1957 VW bug once, that was scary!

I had all the machine work done to the engine in my avitar while I was in Florida for the winter. Complete 345 Hemi...2x4's to oil pan. We loaded the entire engine, totally un***embled, into the trunk of my Eldorado, and drove to Upstate NY @ 70 MPH...no problem...

I've hauled parts in the trunks of cars, in the back seat, strapped to the roof.

Last big fiasco was a slant pan hydro in the trunk of a borrowed mid sized crysler (late model). First I had to drop off the 40 Ford brakes to make room for it (I think there were 3 sets complete). Loaded up the hydro along with some other little bits the fella had and drove about another 400 or 500 miles to my next stop.

 

ever since she made me sell my pickup truck to buy her Soccer-mom ***ault vehicle... I haul all my parts in her nice SUV. I had a transmission and 4 rusty old wheels in there a few weekends ago, and she about had a cow. "What the heck are all these grease streaks and rust smears doing in the back of my car?" My response - "So? When can I get an old beater pickup truck to run around in?"

 

In the late 70's, my wife, two daughters and I were returning from disney world, travelling through Tennessee, when I spot this old wrecking yard on a hill. I walked up to the gate and gave a yell. Being it was Sunday, I figured there was no one there, but a voice yelled to jump the gate and come on up.

We pulled the two running boards off a 1ton Ford truck to graft onto the boards I needed for my '46 1/2 ton. His propane torch ran out of gas, so we had to use wrenches. Strapped it to the top of the Aspen wagon for the trip back to IL.

For the last couple years, I burned corn to heat my house. I pulled a gravity flow wagon full of corn, over 9000 pounds with my '99 Ford Ranger for six miles. Had to take it slow.

 

Hauled a 324" Rocket Motor for my 50 Ford coupe home in the trunk of sister's 47 Chevy coupe.

Sister didn't mind, mom got mad.

Didn't hurt the Chevy, but I often wonder where that car went to.

Last I heard, it went to Bakersfield and ended up in the hands of some hot rodders.

Ice blue in color, it had "It's a Ford" painted on the side.

It was when car names were popular and the name was a take off on Ford's TV ads.

 

Does it have to be car parts? Went from M***. to Carlise, Pa. some years ago and picked up a Stearman biplane fuselage for my brother. He made a hitch to attach to the tailwheel mount, we put a 2x4 with lights on it across the landing gear struts and towed it back to M***. on its wheels with a 73 Chev 1/2 ton pkp. We did attract a bit of attention but none with flashing blue lights. A Stearman is a rather good sized plane.

 

Sure,but I should have,cus well!,anyway made me remember bring a 48 front axle home on my bike,scratched up the bars and the tair in the seat plus hart to sit on and pedal, but I got home with[1957]

 

Loaded a 1961 GMC cabover fire truck complete with 2000 gallon water tank (oh yeah forgot to mention the V-12 gas motor in it/very heavy) on the back of the company slide off truck. Single axle Chevy Topkick(way under powered) it was so heavy that I had to ease the slide off body up the rails and let gravity help when it went over center, the hydraulic cylinders would not lift the body,just sat there and groaned. The stupid things you will do when you're young!!!! Guessing I was overloaded by 10-15,000 lbs for the trucks license. I'm sure glad we don't have mountains!!!!

 

I was the only one with a hazmat liscense in my unit one day and had to pick up a load. Asked the guy what he just loaded up into the back of the HMMWV and he says, 2,500rds of 5.56 and 2 cases of C4! Please sign here...

I have never been so scared of potholes. Or getting into an accident.

 

Heard a guy tell me he removed the p***enger seat of his Beetle one time and hauled a BBC in there.

I hauled a bunch of broken granite counter top I was going to use as pavers in my Capri. Loaded the trunk and floors. It was after I got moving I realized just how heavy I had loaded it and the tires were rubbing.

 

Back in 71 I was in the Air Force in South Carolina.I was driving a 66 Fairlane.A buddy of mine from North Carolina sold me a 427 engine for my car.I could not keep it in the barracks,(I tried to,but they made me move it)so I had it riding in the trunk of my Fairlane for a couple of months until I could make a trip back home to unload it.My gas gauge never worked the same after that.(The trunk floor is the gas tank).

 

That reminds me of a short (Thank god) trip I had to make on one exercise. Took a guy back to rear esh for medical reasons and was told to pick up some gear from the unit Q.
12 HERA* 155mm Shells and charge bags! The ****ers were so tall that they didn't quite sit in the Landrover properly and hung over the back, single AD strap and me sitting on top of them 'to keep them from moving!'.

Then there was the time I transported 60 F88 AusSteyer ***ault rifles back to base in the back of my daily driver one ANZAC Day.

(*HERA, High Explosive Rocket ***ist. So not only the largest artillery round in the Australian Defense Force but built in rocket rocket motors as well with enough cordite to punch each of those ****ers over 30km! The cordite propellant came in small bags, not in a br*** casing like smaller rounds)[/)

 

Back in the late 80's I hauled a Chevy 302 in the hatch area of a Ford ******.

When you could still buy the steel 69 Z cowl hoods from GM I hauled one of them in a 67 Impala.

A few years back at a Super Chevy show I sold a guy a SS hood for a 66 Chevelle. He pulled up at the end of the day to load it and was driving a nearly new BMW , pulled out a blanket , tossed it on the roof and tied it down and left with it.

 

I have a buddy that came home on a plane with two bumpers taped togther as carry on baggage. This was way back when but I saw him get away with it.

 

Early 90's I checked a bunch of truck suspension parts as carry on and baggage coming back from Pomona one year. It was in that little airport in Ontario,Ca and they gave me a hard time at first but then went ahead and let me board with it. Another one of our guys had a hard time going through check in years ago with one of those monster torque wrenches.

 

Not car related but I worked for a number of years behind a farm equipment parts counter. A guy sent his wife to town (about 80 mile one way) for parts. One of the items on his list was a cutter bar for his 30' combine header. She was driving her Lincoln Town Car!.

We wired it under the car to the frame with about five feet sticking out front and back and away she went. Guess she made it, we never heard different.

 

This past Fall Carlisle we carted a bare 35-40 frame in the back of the extended cab shortbed p-up up there. We had 6 ft or more sticking out and it sat "on top" as the truck was loaded. We also had a small utility trailer behind us with a complete flattie in it, all kinds of rims, tires, etc, that the frame had to "swing over" as to not hit anything. We made it, no issues.

I sold the frame at the show and the guy who bought it had a van or SUV. He unhooked the second and third set of seats, slid the frame in and sat the seats on top of it for the boys to ride home on. It must have stuck out about 5 feet as well. I didn't see it as my buddy took the frame out to him and he said it was as good if not better than our trip up!

 

2 and a half 327's or 950lbs of a trans am hulk or 331 hemi with trans in an 81 el camino, same car i used as a battering ram to move a PACKED storage shed
