I sold this thing to a guy I know and he is convinced I am a giant idiot who sold a 427/428 to him for cheap. I am a big guy but a giant? I think not. and I know the engine was the original engine from my '66 country sedan. So my question is, Is there an easy way to show him that is is only a 352. I have already pointed out the head casting numbers and the block numbers. so I am at a loss. Is there another thing. I need to crush his spirit but I am too lazy to pull the heads or oil pan thanks, -adam
if you actually got any money for a 352 ford motor other than s**** prices you did well! he's gonna find out when he goes to buy parts what he has. enjoy the moment.
Well maybe he is thinking your 352cu block will bore from the stock 4.00bore to the 4.13bore the 428cu uses, it's very possible, some of the 66 castings will, I have one, here is a link to a drill bit test they do to determine if it has enuff meat between the cylinder bores: http://www.fordification.com/bumpwiki/index.php?***le=Drill_Bit_Test
You did your job. Maybe he plans on telling everybody it's a 427-428 after he gets it installed and is convincing himself now.
Crank the no. 1 cyl. to TDC. Take the spark plug out of no. 1 hole and find a clean dowel small enough to to fit through the plug hole and drop it in. Make a mark on the dowel at the edge of the plug hole, then crank the engine (by hand) to the bottom of the stroke and make another mark. Measure the distance between the marks and that is roughly your stroke. If it's about 3.5" you have a 352. If it's about 3.784" you probably have a 390, but the 427 has the same stroke. If you want to check the bore, remove a head and measure. 390=4.052 , 427=4.232
Tell him to put it in a'63 Galaxy. If it runs 16 seconds, it's a 352. If it runs 12 seconds, it's a 427.....
I doubt there is much you can do to make him believe he didn't get a deal. Remember Da Nile is not just a river in Egypt. Unless this is your boss and being a giant idiot is keeping you from getting a raise I probably wouldn't sweat it. Look at the upside of this. If he's telling everybody what a dinkas you are its a good time to unload all your junk. Lay the stuff out be honest about what it is and let the rest of the fools think you are taking a beating on it.
Tell him to check the casting numbers cause I have a 352 and ran the number s it came back as a 427 as well but its not. Not sure if you still have the numbers but you can google it and get all the answers you need. I learned this when I first got my truck and started researching Fe motors. At first I thought I had a 427/428 as well but just didnt believe it. More I read and asked I realized it. I can tell you though some of those casting numbers make you think you do. When I get back to where i live (i work out of town) I will explain my numbers and show they say 427 but its not. ANyway do the boreing and stroke test (sounds weird).
My brother was convinced for years that he had a 413 in his '63 Dodge Wagon, we knew it was a very strong 383, but he seemed so happy . . .
Don't sweat it. You told the truth and that's it. Karma will win out and he'll figure it out one day so no worries for you there. I'd wait to hear the stories . . . "yessir, it's a six bolt main 440 side oiler...." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Funny thing about the late BB Buicks. They're not overly popular, but everyone that's selling anything remotely ***ociated with the 430 & 455's labels it as "Stage 1."
Cant tell much by casting numbers. All of the FE,s that i have seen 1965 or newer had 352 cast on the front of the block. I have a 330 truck engine with 352 cast on the front and 427 cast on the back. Pull the pan take calipers and measure the piston. Also a 352 has a nickle sized 1/4 moon cutout on the rear crank flange. Im pretty shure 428,s require a special flywheel. OldWolf
heh. and around here, it's always h.o., ram air IV, or 4-4-2, w-30. and we have one real genius that insists his 70 odd trans am was a "455 ram air IV, h.o." this was also an apparent ws6 car, and somehow, had 4 wheel disc brakes in 73. and it was a bandit car. but it was white. there is a stage 1 455 in my garage, but it is a back up motor for the g.s. that sleeps next to it. (which is a really nice triple black convertible 70. it's not mine, but I wouldn't mind owning it.)
That 352 didn't just happen to have some 3/4" bolt heads hanging on the sides of the block just above the pan rail did it? The Wizzard
why yes it did. the weird thing is it had this huge chain (6ft) running from the crank to cogs on both heads. and the valve covers had Soch cast on them... thanks for all the help. I really don't care what he thinks. I know it was the original motor in the car and the car spec'd out with a 352/4bl. the guy whose shop my car is in just really wants to stuff this guy. and they're friends! He is just tired of his chisler ways.
In the parts buisness I am amazed at how many "Boss 302" engines there are! So for fun, sometimes we will sell them parts such as valve cover gaskets for a Boss and when they come back complaining, then we explain that Ford never built a 2bbl Boss engine. Real simple folks, at least on that one.
