I'm doin' 65 down the hiway this morning on my way to my buddies shop to get a laundry list of **** fixed on Franke. Get there and proceed to tell Roger everything to be done, and the last thing on the list was the rubber brake pad came off...he says I'll do that right now... ...he grabs the pad and wrestles with it a bit and then says "WTF"!...he's standing there with the brake pedal in his hand! . Seems the nut had backed off on the bottom, and had fallen off. Ha said the only thing that saved my *** was the fact that the pedal is knurled at the bottom and was wedged in and only came out while he was jerking on it. How many miles had I driven without that nut?
good point,Im going over my 56 from head to toe lately,it was stored for about 30 years and Im findin all kinds of **** that needs attention including NO coterpins in the end of the draglink,,,,,,,,,,,,CYA fellas!
thats not good.. i have told myself that when i get my A build done , there will be a day before it goes anywhere out of my shop, that i sit down and go from one end of the car to the other tightning every screw and bolt before it goes out for its first run..or at least putting a wrench on each one to be sure it hasent been forgotten
Theres alway something ready to fall off these things and its' our job to find'em. You know that clevis bolt that goes thru the MC shaft rodend and into the brake pedal arm? You have any idea how many of them i have seen without a cotter pin? I always check them before a car leaves the shop.
Beginning in early spring, I check everything that moves, turns, rotates or generally spins in my car...that includes tightening pan bolts, valve cover bolts, water pump bolts, fan bolt and alternator bolts...as well an anything under the car that does the above...and that includes wheel bearings... Ya know, there's over 130,000 miles on my old Studey...and not once did I have to replace anything out on the highway because a nut fell off...oh wait, I lost my club plaque in Joplin once...but it wasn't becuase the nuts fell off...that damned chain broke...!!! Make it a point to go over your car in the early spring...especially if you do as much highway driving as I do...!!! R-
3W, be careful with your nuts, your gettin' old, ya know. Last thing you wanna do is loose a nut while drivin'. thanks for the advise.
Seems the nut had backed off on the bottom, and had fallen off. Ha said the only thing that saved my *** was the fact that the pedal is knurled at the bottom and was wedged in and only came out while he was jerking on it. I jerk on it to check my nuts a couple times a week.
I had something similar happen to me. I left the house one day and rolled through the stop sign at the end of my street and got "lucky" with a green light onto the freeway. Only to find out that I had no brakes when some jaggoff cut in front of me. Downshifting and pulling the e-brake were about all I could do to stop and that took quite some time. It ended up being a brake line that had rusted through under one of the hold downs on the rear axle. A little preventative maintenace goes a long way.....check yer **** out guys! P.S. I did leave some pretty cool striping down the freeway from trying to pump the pedal, the break fluid left marks there to remind me of the event for over a month.
One of the reasons I think an emergency brake is a good idea in all cars. Saved my *** on a couple occasions over the years. When did they stop calling them e-brakes and start calling them parking brakes? Was it when dual M/Cs came out. Just curious. Glad you found that in the shop instead of the hard way Larry.
I had the exact same thing happen to me too.I know I am due for the annual go over for sure. Thanks for the reminder.
I've seen this happen, pull back on your brake pedal to the stop and the push rod to the master cylinder falls out the back of the piston. Whoa ,no brakes. The fix is adjust your pedal arm stop so rod can't fall out of piston
Just had my ****** linkage come off, the bolt that holds the link from the shifter to the arm on the ****** came off. Manual shift PG was stuck in first, I had to (with the car running) push it into drive to get home...
My wife drives a 97 Subaru Right hand drive to deliver mail, she's a postal worker. 600 stops a day, mailbox to mailbox. In any event, one day she said to check the car the brake pedal felt "wobbly". I had no idea what she meant by wobbly so I bent down and grabbed the pedal and the pad came off in my hand..................metal and all. It was rotted underneath the rubber pad from all the salt getting dragged in with the feet in NY winters. Who would have thought!
While you're checking your nuts, Larry, you might as well turn your head to the left and cough. Multi-tasking.
The nut holding the steering wheel can be seriously flawed sometimes Glad your episode didn't result in carnage....
I had a late model Jeep Cherokee clutch pedal break off one time on a low mileage unit. Scared me, but no big deal. Robot welder must have had a hangover that day. Old great aunt of mine had a steering wheel come off while driving back in the 60's in Oakland, CA traffic. Somehow she survived too.
Small world,i went to a little car event last saturday here local. For some reason the day before i decided to put the model a up on the rack to look things over for the first time since i built her over a year and a half ago..............WHAT I FOUND WOULD SCARE THE HELL OUT OF A FELLA!!!. I found myself wrenching miss items for over an hour.Bet your *** i won't wait so long again
