i figure we can get this thing done in a weekend at the very most. my 50 has sat out side with a tarp on it before so i can push it in the driveway and we have a hack work shop!

now i just want to find out from the rest of the gmb's when they want to do this. seeing as i dont have a job im free any time [IMG] but i figure start on a saterday morning. hopefully be done saterday night. if its not then we prob shouldnt be working on cars.

im getting a new welder this week. its just a small craftsmen one. but should work for what we have to do. does any one have a pipe bender so we can get some exhuast on it too???

well thats what i was thinking so let get er done!

Ummm...ain't we gonna need a few trivial items first...

Such as a REAR AXLE, maybe SPRINGS, possibly a set of SHOCKS...a MASTER CYLINDER perhaps... not to mention whatever goes in the booster to make the master cylinder work. (Likely a dealer part...just no idea what it is?).

Should be NO WELDING involved...if the right axle turns up! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Heck, you should have that Galaxie banged out by tomorrow afternoon...then you can slip a new trans into the Chevelle before midnight...oughtta leave you the rest of the week free to bust a move on your 50...you'll be on the road long before I am!

Get the parts together and lets do it! THRASHES are a blast, good friends, good food, and something gets accomplished.... plus I'll get to try out my new welding skills [IMG] They say practice makes perfect [IMG]

Hey Greg, I got you everything from the brake pedal to the master cylinder. There should be no "dealer" parts needed, unless you threw shit away! [IMG] (and I can get you a "probably good" junkyard master for free to replace the "core" i got ya before) [IMG]

Ya know Greg, some people see the glass as half empty, some see it half full, and some drink out of a can, so ya just can't tell how much is in there. If it runs out, shut the fuck up and grab another can! [IMG]

Ha Ha Ha...I ain't sure, Steve...but I'm almost sure there HAS to be a rod of some sort that pushes against the master...

I had a new AMC drum brake master laying around, so I set that in place, but I can't believe it would work by osmosis...ain't there a pushrod or sumthin'???

Empty glass? I see a mountain of bottles with no opener in sight!!! [IMG]

Hack, Haven't you got the parts rounded up yet? It was 4/5 months ago you wanted to do this and I volunteered my place to do the deed. I don't want to stick my nose in but if you don't pre-plan this I envision a dead car taking up garage space for the duration of the winter. What gives?

Dirty's offer is awesome but if half the folks show that showed at the Big Olds thrash, there will not be enough room to move around the garage. PLEASE take Frank up on his offer of his shop, it's a dream shop, not to mention he's got HEAT! [IMG]

dont u worry about parts. just get together a list of what were going to need and im sure we all have the shit laying in our garage's some where.

and if u dont want to keep the car. just think how much easier it is to sell a running driving car.

and denise i was thinking about the amount of people and the space i have. so you have a good point.

Well, we've got a problem folks. I was sure that by offering to help out with this project there would be a flurry of activity getting prepared and actually doing the work. That did not happen. So as a result I've been preparing for winter and getting my stuff inside and arranged so I can work on one of my projects. All we need here is one BIG snowfall and I'm screwed as far as getting anything in and out. As a result Fat Hack has missed his "WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY" to use my place until at least late spring or beyond. I really hate to be an asshole but I thought my offer would have been taken advantage of in a timely manner, only to find out the "parts needed" list is just as long now as it was when we first discussed it.

Not to worry Frank, everyone understands the settleing in part for the winter. Dirty got the ball rolling last nite while we were all standing around in the garage. Parts can be gathered over the long winter and a thrash can be planned for springtime at Dirty's place where a heated garage won't be neccessary. even if a Hack Thrash was done in the next tmonth or two he wouldn't be driving it till spring anyway. More planning and parts gathering can be done in the meantime.

so.... fill us in on what "project" your going to be working on. Do you need any help welding??? [IMG]

Well, there is quite a list to choose from. The most likely is the '48 PU. I'd like to get the chassis done and driveable as I don't know if I really want the outside to be "finished". I'm thinking more like if you found an old gas station service truck and just got it running. I've got a fresh 454 and T400 for it along with the Ford 9" I got from enjenjo. Maybe do a logo on the doors like HotRodDrummer's.
Next up would be the '32 5w that I've had for almost 30 years. The '34 PU with the flathead/T5 is calling (this one is Rocky inspired). I just checked and the '32 roadster is still up on the loft and I think the guy who has the '57 dual quad Eldorado engine is weakening and about to sell. That would make a perfect late 50's project. I only need some body panels and I could put together a modified project. And last but not least I could always finish the '40 coupe I was going to do for my wife before we found the '37 sedan she is driving.
Decisions, decisions, what's a fella to do?

ya know Frank, if you just gave most of that stuff to me, it would be a major help in a couple of ways!
FIRST, it would make it WAY easier for you to decide what to work on, and B [IMG] it would make room to thrash on HACKS car.
I've been sitting here trying, and I can't seem to think of a downside to that solution! [IMG]

I shot Frank (Fab32) a PM a couple weeks ago and he explained his situation...I totally understood, and I was cool with it since I didn't have the parts together anyway. Don't want anyone blaming Frank for anything...just to be clear!

It was a judgement call, and I swung the wrong way thinking it'd be easier in the short run. I really wanted to graft a Celebrity cradle to the 49, which would have given it a motor, trans, drive axle, disc brakes and modern steering all in one shot...and the worthless old stock rear coulda just rolled around behind the car for a while till something better was slipped into place and plumbed for brakes.

After dropping the V6 and auto tranny in the conventional way, I've come to see that the frame is really too shot to even support the car while sitting in the driveway...it's a challenge just to jack the thing up safely!

Any "Hack Thrash" would just band-aid the situation...and, in all honesty, would just end up putting a very unsafe car onto the public roadways...with rear brakes only and a frame just itching to break in half!

I doubt that I can find the resources (namely, the people skilled and willing enough to do it!) to drop the 49 body onto a re-inforced and lengthened Celebrity cradle and floor pan, so the odds of this thing ever getting done are pretty slim.

(At this point, I would just want to cut the body off of a Celebrity at the rocker panels, lengthen it about five inches, then have the 49 body welded onto it with the required reinforcements and some sort of fabricated upper strut mounts for the front. It was my intention to do this from day one, but I got so much static for it that I opted to try and put it together the 'popular' way.)

From the onset, what I wanted was a 49 Chevy that ran and drove like a Celebrity...I love those cars for their smooth ride and respectable mileage. The track width is spot on, and the finished product would weigh about the same as a stock Celebrity, just giving up some aerodynamics! It was a stupid dream, I suppose, but that was how I wanted it done.

I guess I'll just look for a clean Celebrity and restore the thing...have something I can enjoy driving and be done with it...take the short way around the barn for once!

You know Hack, I have a pick-up truck, and a whole lot of local help tracking down parts. Just give us a list, and I am sure that we can help you out. SO.....quit yer procrastinating, and get to work on that list, before all of us kick your ass! [IMG]

I just copied and pasted Hack's wish list from the other post from back in August. I must have been outta town cuz I don't remember seeing that post.

"Hmmm...a "grocery list" for the car, eh?

    I'll give it a try:

Driver's side exhaust manifold, must exit straight back, 2.8/3.1 Chevy V6

Passenger's side exhaust manifold, can exit pretty much anywhere!

Some sort of throttle cable, or hydraulic throttle set-up?

63 amp alternator for a 75 Vega (it's what I had, so I made the bracket for it!)

Side post battery. (I'm told that some newer batteries have both?)

    Steel transmission cooling lines

5/16 rubber fuel hose (several feet)

3/8 rubber fuel hose (several feet)

    A whole lotta clamps

    A water pump/alternator belt

A bunch of odd radiator hoses and bits and clamps...it's one WEIRD set-up!

    An air cleaner for a V6 1980-83 Citation/Celebrity.

Spark plug wires for a 1982 2.8 V6 with HEI distributor

Fuel pressure regulator...don't know what for...but it needs to really cut the pressure!

Master cylinder for 1982-86 2wd S10 with power brakes

Push rod for master cylinder if it needs one?

GM 10 bolt or Ford 8" rear axle the right width to fit these cars?

    Rear brake (flex) hose

Four wheels and tires. (two are borrowed, two are bad!)

Proportioning valve (S10 2wd most likely)

    Residual valves

    ***********************************************************************************

Well, that's the bulk of it...I'm sure there's other stuff...but that's the major items.

Thanks, Rudy...AGAIN (for putting up an alternator this time!).

And thanks to everyone else wanting to help out!"

    I got a "techie" type question, will a rear from a '56 Oldsmobile fit Hack's set-up?

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure someone will) but doesn't an S-10 chassis fit under one of theses bodies fairly easy? If so, I would think tracking down one of those should be easy....and still be able to use the (ugh!) 2.8. Then you would have everything you'd need and easy to work on.
    Just my 2 cents.

I think if Greg no longer wants this car as his project, we should let him move it out of the way for something he will be more interested in, I think he'll be a li'l more apt to working on something he wants!

He'll look really weird pulling up in a hotrod citation on Friday night though [IMG]

Actually the Hackster is burnt out on the old chebby. it happens, I burn out on one once in awhile myself. And it seems that they are usually hard to give away once you burn out. I think its the Hot Rod Gawd saying finish what you started. I've actually offered to trade sell or even give him a carthat he likes. He's got too much class for the last option. Go figure.

Now onto the list. I have most of the brake pieces for the wishlist out in my shed. Except its not a power setup. I've got a battery but ya just can't mail 'em. And I have an alternator for an S-10 that will work just fine.
Hack has exhaust manifolds already from what I understand.

OK my big friend, give me the word and I'll ship.
And yes the olds rear should work just fine.

Thanks for the help and support as far as parts go, but I've already got most of the stuff on that list...and they're already installed on the car.

The only thing left is a rear axle (to go the RWD route! [IMG]), probably rear springs, maybe rear shocks (though the ass end weighs nothing, so I doubt shocks will be much of an issue), and whatever it takes to put brakes on this thing.

Having a rear axle installed, a driveshaft fitted, and brakes hooked up would make the car driveable...but it'd still be questionable as far as safety goes.

(But at least it wouldn't be stuck in one spot...it COULD be started (with ALOT of effort!) and moved around as needed...which is as close to roadworthy as I can ever realistically see this car being without a dumptruck full of money thrown at it!)

Porknbeaner...your car is WAY too cool for me to just up and take it...and I couldn't live with myself if I traded you MY wreck for your groovy driver...though I really DO appreciate the offer!

...and don't worry too much, Dvlscoupe...I'd be the type to run open pipes on the dubious Celebrity Project to blend in a little!!! [IMG]

Steve (HRTH), You'll never know how much your offer means to me. I guess you never know who your friends really are until you face a crisis like the one I find myself in. As much as I appreciate it I can't possibly put you through the pain and suffering that having this junk clutter up you place would create. No, I caused this problem and I'm going to be man enough to shoulder the consequences. Thanks for the offer. As they say, it's the thought that counts.

I still have that late model Firebird rearend and Jdub has the welding skills to attache leaf spring perches. I'll do some searchin' through other people's parts piles (at work) to see what I can get. I also have an alternator if needed. Let's do this!
