I bought the 1956 Pontiac pictured below from 52 styleline. The car ran at the Cherokee Strip Dragway (60s-70s) which I understand is the M.A.D. track. Does anyone here have some pictures from the Arkansas City track (M.A.D.) in the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies. I am hoping someone has a period picture of this car. Tad tad_2670@yahoo.com
Sorry about the wiseguy move - couldn't resist the obvious. Anyway, looks really solid - you'd never know it'd been raced (from these shots) - that's pretty unique...Good luck with this project!
I looked at that car more than once and had to tell myself to let someone have it that had time to build it. That is one neat old g***er. Make it fly.
Jim, Thanks, but the other two are in the car, I will probably not use them anyway, I am going to use a set of Pontiac dogdish hubcaps. Tad
I used to manage the Ark City track from 65 to 69. I remember seeing the car there. But I don't remember anything about it. I have that CRS disease. If something comes to mind I will let you know. Joe
Hey, that car looks familiar. Hopefully you can find some more information about it. You might add that Bob Frye out of Blackwell, Oklahoma was the owner back when it was raced at Ark City.
The car has what I believe is a Pontiac 316ci engine with a Wieland 4bbl manifold on it and fenderwell headers, there is a rod running from the distributor to the p***engers compartment to adjust the timing from the drivers set. The front bumper has been replaced with a light bumper, radiator support has been lightened as well as the interior of the doors. The owner of the car was Robert H. Frye on : 12/18/1969 Oklahoma Vehicle Inspection Certificate in the car has him living at 307 East Cottage in Blackwell, OK 9/11/1975 a letter in the car has him living at 1112 Eight Street Perry, Oklahoma A Mid-American Dragway flyer (CBRA event) in the car was mailed to Jeff Edwards 1203 Rose Terrace Perry, Oklahoma Do any of you recognize the car, remember the Cherokee Strip Dragway, or know Jeff Edwards, or Robert H. Frye (per a letter in the car Robert was 39 in 1975; 71ish now?). Any help would be appreciated; Thank you.
Joe, What was the track called when you managed it? Do you have any old photos of the track from those days? Tad tad_2670@yahoo.com
I spoke to Joe, great guy that has givin me some people to talk with, the leads are quickly drying up. Does anyone on this forum have pictures of this track from the mid sixties to the mid seventies?
A little over a year ago I sold Old Injun to Suzy and Tony. Since the sale we have kept in touch. Last weekend the Pontiac was brought back to a dragstrip after 30 years of retirement. Tony sent some video clips to me and I can't help but to share them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpMUeyGRKiI&feature=channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmVvvdI-dwA&feature=channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7tDn6sijkM&feature=email
That was cool - I have to say i like the look of the black steelies better though, but it ain't my car... nice save!
Sue and Tony are prob the perfect couple to have got this car they live down the street from me and I ve seen them buy and sell about six cars since I moved here but this car is like a special project for them the amount of time that they ve invested in finding out the history of this car and now returning it to the strip shows it's not all about dumping 15000 in to car to show what it once was , sometimes it's about what it still does, and that is RUN , like a ****d date!!!
I agree... Tony and Sue really do put their heart and soul into their cars. Yeah, they have tried out quite a few, but that's what it's all about... finding one that you truely love.
