Hey all, So I'm originally from Sydney but I've been living in Vancouver, BC the past 7 years doing the long-haul truck thing. I'm getting the itch to move back home for good though....but I have 'baggage'... I have a mate in the auto shipping/container business, so getting them to Oz won't be a problem. But once i get them there (Sydney), what hoops would I need to jump through to get them on the road? I don't want to go as far as converting them to RHD, so what are my options....if any.... cheers. http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/importing_vehicles/index.aspx Have a look here...........we have to get a permit to import, but seeing you are living there and owned them may be different. we have plenty of left hook cars on the road now. Basically they go thru a blue slip check at certified stations. checking numbers, lights blinkers, no rust, brake test, suspension.......all usual rego stuff. If the cars are modified you may have to get an engineers cert......... Maybe ask on ozrodders too. cheers. (pmed some more info)
Hi mate, I have a 65 mustang that was LHD and a 62 f100 (original RHD) I live in Vic, but the rules are a little more relaxed there than QLD. LHD is ok (even with out the 'caution left hand drive' stickers) provided than more than 30 years old. Vic does NOT require amber indicators rear seatbelts or noise/emission requirements etc, just whatever was accepted in the same year as the build of your car. I beleive NSW is the same except the annual blue slip. I know regardless of originality, there are some basic things that you would need to check. Stupid things like original track width etc, you can only put 1" wider rims than standard otherwise engineers is required (although getting the Rw checker to pick this would be tough) engine/gearbox changes etc
First and most important question... Do you have legal titles for those cars? I don't mean bill of sale, I mean correct titles. You won't be allowed to import them if you don't have legal titles. Cheers, Glen.
Thanks for all the handy info, gents! So does NSW require amber turn-signals or can i stick with the reds on the back? And yeah i've got all the rego/titles in my name....the 54 is going for sure, the 47 might get sold before I leave.
my 50 wayfarer will be headed to the east side of the island, the kat has bought three old dodges and imported them all, with out problem, from canada should be any worst or different, Aw sydney laddie, spent a couple of weeks in balkum hills back in 76, abit behind the times back then, but everyone that comes home wishes they could stay there, that and auckland NZ..good kats for sure. good on headed for home. (bobs your uncle)
