I have the original straight six in my '60 F-100 with single barrel carb. It idles just fine but when I press on the accelerator it starts to stall. Currently it's using an electric fuel pump instead of the mechanical. Any help would be awesome.
could be a bad pump, clogged filter, junk in the tank (clogged pickup), carb problems, timing issues, or a number of different things. I'd start by checking that electric fuel pump.
I'd start by checking the accelerator pump, as it is both the easiest to check, and the most obvious culprit. If the accelerator pump should be just fine and working, I'd check for what oilslinger53 has mentioned. Pretty good approach; timing and fuel delivery, that's all there really is. 1960's ford sixes should have come from the factory with either holley 1904 or 1908/09. I suppose you all have diagrams of that simple one-holer ready? If not, TOCMP website should have some. If they should happen to be down, IM me, I'll send scans of mine over at no charge.
Cl***ic fuel supply issue. Now it's on you to determine if it's due to low pump output, line restriction, or clogs/restriction inside the carb. Your electric pump sounds temporary, is it located at the front of the car? Electric pumps are pushers, not pullers and HAVE to be mounted near the tank to output properly. Good luck
The carb is holly 1904 that I recently rebuilt. The carb seems to be ok but this is my first rebuild. Its actually a panel truck and when I bought it the old tank was bad so they put in a fuel cell in the back so there is about 12 feet of line before it gets even get to the pump. Ill see about relocating it closer to the tank. I am rebuilding the mechanical fuel pump right in hopes that will help/fix it.
Good point to remember........elcetric fuels for the most part are designed to push not pull the fuel from the tank. Mount it as close to the fuel cell outlet as you can get it. Oh, I put my money on the accelerator pump being your nemisous.
