Yes,rust on gears,but how much rust is too much? I rebuild a few standard ******s a year,no expert here,but good enough so they work as they should.I'm putting together a Saginaw that has some rust on the gears.Normally I just toss out rusty **** but this is a budget build for a 200 HP engine.The photo show the rust on the teeth of the clutch gear.It's mostly discoloration but there are some minor pits as you can see.There's also some rust on a few other gears,but this is the worst one. What do you think? Run it see what happens??
Run it !! A few rust pits ain't gona hurt . Now flaking/gaulded would be a different story as metal fatigue was starting.
Yup, run it. I have put 50k and counting on way worse. Just clean it really well first, so there are no loose bits.
