My 8 year old boy drove a truck for the first time today a 48 Ford F1

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by INLAW MODEL A, Nov 1, 2009.

  1. I bought this truck and was determined to get it running. The engine was stuck but I soaked it and got it free. I put in a battery and it had spark so I added a boat tank for fuel and it started up! It has no brakes so it is a little tricky to drive. David likes the truck and wanted to drive it so we put him in it and after a quick how to clutch lesson, he was driving. As you can see in the picture he was as proud as a peacock!! Now we need to get brakes and teach him how to shift. He likes to dump the clutch, but he is still learning.

If he get's it in second gear your gonna have to run faster...wish every kid could learn to drive at that age then by the time they were legal to drive they would have some experience.:D

Now that you taught him to drive, you better hide the keys! I remember when my son learned to drive at a early age like that , next thing I know he sneaks out and runs the car down a hill and into a house. Scared all of us pretty good. :D

  4. thats all my son talks about!!! "daddy when I drive your hot rod?" what a scary day that'll be

That is so cool, what a great smile. I drove early too. I know it helped me get going when the real (legal) time came. The first thing my driving instructor said in high school was "so, how long and you been driving?"

I never took the car out on a joy ride (I did know where the keys' were) and I knew how to work on them way before I got my permit. All of my friends were older than me so I started working on them as soon as one broke down. That's about the time I started drinking BEER too.

Same here, and it was in a '31A. And people wonder how I got this way.

G-pa put a stack of 2x4 blocks on the pedals with plumbers tape, and off I went. Haven't stopped since, neither has that '31A.

my dad thought it was important that i learn how to drive when i was 6 although he didnt have anything as cool as that truck but the 79 mustang fastback was just as fun. my mom on the other hand wasnt thrilled when she found out that i could not only drive but drive a stick shift at the age of 6 lol. she started hiding the keys until i was tought how to hot wire lol

    brings back memories.
I was with my family, 8 or so, pulling a camper with our van, from Ohio to Canada for camping. My dad says "crawl on my lap and start steering." "Now scoot down and press the gas." "ok I'm gonna go sit in the passenger seat." He watched me for about 5 minutes, and then said "ok, I'm taking a nap." I drove a few hundred miles with my mom gritting her teeth behind me.

Put some Duane Eddy music to that second clip and you have the scene from Forrest Gump!!
Its to bad that I know adults that can't drive a stick as well as your 8 yr old.

  15. I have now idea how to overlay music on a video. Oh and by the way, the truck has no brakes, so that is even more impressive.

Gee I thought "Dumping the Clutch" was the right way  Little higher revs though lol.

That was neat and glad you could share. Now is the younger son eager?

He gets it easier, he will get to drive a truck that has brakes!

My grandpa was the one who thought I should know how to drive and by the time I started 1st grade I could drive all of the tractors on his farm. By 8 I was driving his '47 Ford stake rack around the farm and by 10 I was escorting him to town to the feed store in his 1949 Chevy PU. Never drove an automatic until I took my driving test to get a license.
