So i got a 53 ford victoria from my grandma and it has a 283 chevy, and she claims it has the original ford-o-matic transmission in it. Does anyone know if that transmission really can bolt up to a 283 or is it something else?? also this trans is giving me problems, its not shifting good in second and often slips going up hills, i need to get it fixed or would it be better to get a chevy trans mo match up with the chevy engine and what trans would be good to replace it with??
It won't bolt up stock and I've never seen an adapter for that combo. If you have a picture of the trans, preferably from both sides and the back maybe we can help ID.
Probably a powerglide, but thats a sick ass car to be given as gift. Grandmas are always nice. U gotta bag it though, maybe with some skirts would set it off.
yea i wanna bag it hella bad but i just gotta save up and work out all the problems it has now. haha now when i drove it today it shifted 3 times from a stop and i didnt get on it hard enough for the kickdown to kick it down to first, i know the fordomatic starts in 2nd right? then just shifts up to third? i have no clue. haha
I think you may be referring to a cruiseomatic. I am with the masses, you probably have a powerglide or turbo 350 attached to that 283.
Fordomatic is a 2-speed transmission like the PowerGlide, probably a 350 Turbo since it is a 3-speed.
That is correct. A Fordomatic is a two speed. The Cruiseomatic is a 3 speed that generally starts in second unless you pull it into low.
The Fordomatics of this era were in fact three speeds not to be confused with the late 50s Fordomatics (2 speed). However when starting off in drive, the tranny starts off in second gear and then shifts to high. Full throttle starts from a dead stop would cause the tranny to start off in low, shift to second and then into high.
ohh ok, hmm, well when i started from a stop, and didnt floor it, just a nice easy start off, it still shifted three times, could that be something messed up in the transmission or is it just a dif transmission?
Are you sure it's shifting three times? If it really is shifting three times then it is a four speed. Regardless it is not the original. Quit guessing about what it is, look at the pan and identify it.
Sounds like someone put a dual range hydro, or a 700r4, or even a 2004r in there. Three shifts and you are in 4th or overdrive. Pics would really help.
Chances are it's some flavor of Chevy transmission. The Chevy engine/transmission combo is a neat fit in the '52-'53 Ford and a Chevy automatic would be the obvious choice. As has been suggested, a photo of the pan will identify it. Nice car!
haha 73rr yea my grandma is freaking awesome! BUt yea missysdad1, i et she did stick somethin in there, i will try to get pics up 2maro, just havent had time.
i know its been awhile but if anybody is curious, i found out about 5 months ago, i have a 2 speedpower glide! but im looking at a 350 3-speed becuase of all the hills i have to drive up and down.
