I was going to build a couple 2 x 6" headers to lift and support my 55 body. One over the trunk area, one at the firewall and I was going to tie these into the existing framing of the gararge for some extra stability. The headers will be 10' long with 2 2 x 4's together to support the header end, the other end will be supported by the wall. I wanted to lift and support the body as long as it takes me to do my frame work which could take up to 6 months? Or longer. I was also going to put some 4 x 4's under the body once it was up in the air and tie those into the header post. Are the 2 x 6 enough or go 2 x 8? My kids use the same garage so I want to be safe as possible here so I don't mind the overkill . Has anyone here done something like this? Thanks for any input, Bill
Ihave a 4" x 8" x 12ft long beam that spans 4 trusses in my ceiling. I gave the trusses extra verticle support by tying the bottoms to the angled part of the truss with 2"x6"s. I've lifted a 4' cast iron foot shear and also a truck frame without so much as a creak from the timbers.
I went in the other direction - I bought 4 Roller Horses from Lowes. I think took a set of 2x4's Nailed together to give me 4x4 strenght. I jack up the body and put the 2x4's under the body in the front and back and can roll the frame out under the body - the Roller horses allow me to move the body side to side. I put Clams on the end of the 2x4's so they can not roll off the horses.
