I want to paint my firewall, bumpers and interior trim pieces the color of the spokes of my American Racing Torq Thrust D wheels (the fake mag paint color, darker not the light grey I have seen on some). I just got the wheels so I could scan the color and get the firewall painted before I drop the body on the frame. I just got back from the paint store and they told me they couldn't scan the color since they needed a flat part for the camera to image. Now I have a wheel sitting at my desk mocking me, and I am starting to get used to this project mocking my feeble attempts at planning. Any ideas of where I can find a color mix code to match the wheels? I wanted to shoot it with single stage concept PPG, but it seems that paint store pretty much only carries the 'shop line' that is Omni, and I am putting too many years, hours and blood into this project to put crap cheap paint on it, so I am out of luck there too. I know I can go down to Raleigh and get the PPG store to mix me the concept, but I need a color code for it to match perfectly first. This idea started since I have some straight bumpers that the chrome fell off a few decades ago, and I am trying to make the bank stretch across the whole project. Paint is cheaper then chrome, even when I get the decent stuff. Ideas?
Get some latex paint sample cards from your local home improvement store ( Lowe's, Home Depot ) in warm grey tones. Get a bunch from different paint brands. I'll bet you can get pretty close to the color you want by putting the chips next to the wheel. When you have a color you like, take that chip and have it scanned at your automotive paint store. You'll be suprised.
Great idea!!! Thanks! I will hit the home depot on the way home. Nothing like building a Hot Rod to develop more creative problem solving huh?
or ..take the wheel to a local paint house..(PPG) and have them do a color mach scan with their machine..they can pretty much nail it right on the money
That is what I did. I plopped the wheel on the counter and they said it didn't have any flat surface the camera could image. That is why the wheel came to work with me today and is now laughing at me at my desk.
Take it to a Sherwin Williams auto paint dealer, their Select line is very good. If you want to go crazy find a Akzo Nobel Sikkens dealer, very expensive, but the best color matches I've found... Take the wheel back to the paint store, if they don't have paint chips that they can match to the wheel....find another paint store!!!
