Congrats on the cover and feature. Every time I look at a photo I see more touches that I missed the time before.

Awsome Dave! You and the car deserve the spot light! When you stopped by this summer and when you drove away in the dusk light........well what a sight!

The Ford green machine is sweet and so is that white and blue Chevy in the background.

I saw Dave's '49 at Billetproof WA and as a fellow shoebox owner was absolutely floored when I saw parked on the street. I took a million pics and studied it from every angle. For me it's the most inspiring contemporary custom out there. He managed to pull out every ounce of hidden shoebox potential. This car is just on another level in every way.

I have been working on my shoebox for the last few years and always wanted it chopped and in shiny paint but thought my abilities wouldn't catch up to my vision any time soon. Trying to be practical I had all but put the thought out of my head of chopping my car until I saw Dave's '49. I had the chance to talk to him while he was packing up his best custom trophy and trying to get on the road but he took the time to let me snap a few more pictures and told me about the car and gave me some tips about the flow and told me to save every piece until the car is done.

We'll I got back home to UT and with help from a few good friends and a few months later my car now sits chopped, decked, frenched and is well on it's way to being the car I've always seen in my head, all because I met Dave and saw this car. I can honestly say that Dave and his car have changed my life. I've got a long way to go but without that experience I may never have started down this path.

Thanks Dave and congrats on the coverage!

Jon, so glad to hear you did it!! I new you would have a different outlook on things after we talked at Billetproof, and what a job you've done, good on you Buddy. In a conversation I had with Luke Karosi after the he did the feature in Kustoms Illustrated, I told him the ultimate satisfaction for me would be that the car would now hopefully provide insperation for some young fella to do what I did, and realize that it is all possible..... to build what you envision. Thank you for that Jon. My good friend Steve told me something one night in my shop when I was struggleing with a task that seemed hopeless, I now live by that saying ....."If someone else can do it, so can you". I look forward to seeing your Shoebox next year at Billetproof. This all comes around Jon, some kid will be inspired by your ride now also. - Dave

Congrats! And to think I deny any evidence of hotrods and customs in Canada... looks like the cat is out of the bag!

Looked good in primer when I saw it in our parking lot at Hotrod A Rama and it looks even better now!

I love it! It's got to be one of the best shoebox customs done in recent years. Nice choice on the color as well.

Now that's what I like to see! Nothing better than paying it forward.
I built my Chevy after becoming friends with a guy in my town with a full kustom Merc. I mentioned that I really wanted to build a car but had never done any custom work. He said "If you can do bodywork, you can customize!" and that's the summer I started building my Chevy. Now whenever I talk to someone who likes my car and seems smart enough to do their own work I say "If I can do it, you can do it!"
    Beautiful car. Great attitude.

Thank's for the Kudo's Brian, the color really did make a difference that's for sure! I've been a long time admirer of your fabrication and welding skills...simply amazing! I've studied your posts for hours at a time, and have learned so much from them, not to mention, constantly pushing me to a higher skill level. My new Roadster project will no doubt benefit for all the time I've spent viewing your posts. Thanks again. - Dave

This is one of the only cars Ive seen that has looked marvelous in two different versions, extremely well done car and it is stunning. I saw the cover and instantly realized who's car it was, congrats on a cover for a car very, very deserving of all the attention.

  22. I really like it, one of the very best kustoms that have been designed and built in recent years. Thats the kind of kustom that gives me A LOT of inspiration. Congratulations, you did a fantastic work!

Awesome car! When I first saw it from 100 yards away at Santa Maria beside the inn, I saw the color, the front fenders and the Desoto teeth, and I thought it was the Wally Welch Merc redone in its original green. Once my eyes focused, I realized it was a shoebox and then I got really excited! No-one seems to put any design effort into shoeboxes, for some reason they are usually treated recklessly with hasty or typical modifications, so it is a real treat to see one that is well designed! Definitely in my top few faves now along with Jon St. Germain's coral and black one.

Keith, thanks for the Kudos, especialy coming from a fella with an eye for line, and design. It was a tough decision to cut the car up a second time, but I had this vision, and it had to be done. When talking to you at your booth in Santa Maria I was sad to hear that you hadn't brought your Shoebox, I was really looking forward to finaly seeing it.... maybe next year? I will agree with you about Jon St. Germain's coupe being right up there on that list.... as well as that one from Burbank;) -Dave

i don't think that enough can be said about this car,
but it's great to see some true style being thrown in our faces as a testament
of what a kustom really is.... stunning.

Beautiful, well thought out, and expertly executed. Definitely a modern classic, Dave! What bumper guard are you using (I've wanted to have my exhaust exit through bullets, too)?

Stefan, the bumper "Bridge's" are from a '53 Kaiser Manhatten.

  28. Congratulations Dave. Nice to see you getting some more recognition. I am glad I got to see the transformation from up close. Thanks for opening my eyes to all the small details in a Kustom. Truly the COOLEST shoebox ever. (In more ways than one)

Just goes to show you how much PAINT (and proper bodywork) can add to a car...now if this car would have been flat blak...or rust, or ruffly chopped with no windows, it would be just another shoebox Ford in a sea of 'em...

As it is, it's garnered all kinds of attention...and awards/mag covers/articles...

Please take a lesson here...this is what "traditional" Kustoms are all about...
