thank you very much. it'd be greatly appreciated. i'm unsure of the year, but i'll email him and ask him.
Are you sure that it is GAK? GM uses alpha-numeric RPO codes so it should have a number in there somewhere. Read it again and use this website: http://www.drivetrain.com/GMtrkratio_posidata.html
GM part number is 15551410. It's an open 7.5 rear with 3.73 gears. It only fits s series trucks from 85-91. Hope that helps.
jimmybeamer - thank you very much for looking it up for me. quick Q, isn't 3.73 supposed to say GT4? I'm sure the marking could've wore off by now.
GT4 was the ratio code on the 3.73 rear I pulled out of a '93 S10 with a friend recently. It was the 7.50.
Hi, I need to ID the axle code: GAK K095 3 I need to know the gear ratio. The rear axle came off of a 1991 Chevy S10 two wheel drive truck. For some reason the VIN# was looked up at the Chevy dealer with NEGATIVE results. Thanks, Mike
Keep the truck from rolling and jack up one rear wheel. If the rearend is out...just prevent one wheel from turning. (NO turning at all or your count will be off) Mark a line on the driveshaft flange and the rearend housing so you can count turns. Rotate the tire TWO turns exactly and count the number of revolutions of the driveshaft. Just over 3 will be 3.08's (or whatever GM used in those rearends) Almost 3 and a 1/2 will be 3.43's. 3 and 3/4 will be 3.73's. Just over 4 turns will be 4.11's. This will work even if its a GM Gov-Loc Posi because they remain unlocked until a certain amount of slippage with one wheel is detected. With a regular Posi you jack up BOTH wheels and spin the tires once. No diff action due to the stiff clutches in the Posi so the double rotation isn't required. Have you looked in the glove box for the option sticker and found the rear axle code? I've never seen one listed out like that. Usually just a 3 number/letter combo.
