Features 1965 Fairlanes, coupes/hardtops/wagons

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ottoparts, Feb 26, 2009.

  1. So I picked up this little gem. Scary how stock she is. Factory 4bbl car (the ID tag is still on the intake) running the original carburetor. The gold is flaking off the stock air cleaner housing and valve covers. The stock stereo is still in the dash. The odometer show 10,600 something. I'm ***uming that its 110,600. All the trim is there, windows are all good. Hubcaps are in the rear of the car. The only real problem is that the tailgate needs some lovin. The rear gl*** is on the front seat and the left hand side pivot pin in broken.

Now to my questions. I did some searching here and did not find much.
Who has one and can I see a pic?
    Anyone with a g***er/straight axle 65 Fairlane?

I'm thinking of the above and would like to see another wagon as such.

OEM stock stereo radio installed in a 65 Ford, especially a plain jane or middle trimmed Fairlane wagon? I'd be up for some detailed photos of that!

  3. I will get some pics for ya tomorrow.

Have as much fun as you can, but it seems a shame to hack up such a nice survivor. Not to say I would leave it stock, but you don't need one that nice to build a g***er.

There has been mention of one of those square Fairlanes with a front axle roaming the streets of Phoenix.

  5. I to agree about cutting it up. After i got it home earlier this week I really combed over it. It is really complete and stock and I would feel bad about hacking it up.
Therefore I threw it on the local craigslist to see if there is any interest. I also just recently bought a 1960 Falcon factory 2dr wagon. So if the Fairlane does go, then I will g***er the Falcon.

I have a 65 Sport Coupe. Twilight Torquise-White top and a ( tan ) Palimno interior . Currently running a 302/4 speed. There is a Blue straight axle car in the Phoenix area. Also my Favorite 65 race car would be Darrell Drokes 65 Thunderbolt car. They only made one in 65 and thats it. Search the Hamb for stories and pics

Hey otto - Nice , clean Fairlane! 4 dr. wagons look better lowered with a surf board hanging out the back , or as a 60's super stocker, IMO. Better to gas up the 2dr. Falcon wagon!:D
Better yet - set the Fairlane up as a tow vehicle for the Falcon!
    Just my 2 cents.........

I recently picked this one up, basicly stock, except the newer model 302/c4, and the wheels.

I've got this one in the shop right now, was originally going to be 302/aod for the street, now after a weekend at the drag strip, the owner has had a change of direction. Now it gets a 572 BBF.

Using Viper red, so it should be real noticeable going down the track!

  12. Viper red... bummer I personally like the bronze/brown look. She should be good looking when shes done.

I have attached a few pics of the dash to show the stock stereo and what not.

65s are kind of forgotten, all you see are 63s and 64s and the 66 and 67s. A local junkyard has quite a few 65 fairlanes and I think they are all ex military vehicles but have been sitting there a long time.

Patrick Spain is the owner of that one. If I remember right it has a Mustang II front end and airbags.

Personally I don't care for a straight axle on a street driven car, would probably be a handful too with all that weight in the rear:eek:
Now on the other hand it is just an oddball old wagon.
To help you make a choice on changing the front suspension search and look up the prices for rebuild parts especially ball joints. They are getting pricey and some parts just are not available at all:mad: Most of the front end stuff is 62-65 Fairlane ONLY.
I was playing with my Fairlane today, thinking about all that stuff I changed and don't want to do again, as I was laying underneath it.

Here is Mr Spain's wagon. It's on Cardomain.com

  18. I like the oddball factor.

I'm looking at it this way. I can throw money at the stock front suspension (just to replace it later on) or I can throw money at doing a straight axle conversion. So I figure I will go straight for the straight axle.

I just re-read my post what I meant by it's just an oddball old wagon was that it's not somr ir-replaceable cl***ic and doubtful it ever will be, no ofense, so do what you like. BTW there is a a guy on here that goes by Tingler that put a straight axle on his 63. There is an post about it on here.
    Here's my 65 4 door

  20. No offense taken. I get what you mean. It's the red headed step child in the Fairlane line up. There is a 4 door us the street from me that they drive daily.

That Black wagon is just plain wicked. Would be cool to pull up in front of the Supermarket with that !!

  22. Well I started decoding my Fairlane wagon today. Turns out to be a pretty cool ride from the factory.
I started with the VIN and this is what came up....

    <table cellpadding="3" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td colspan="2" style="height: 61px;">1965 Ford Fairlane 500 Custom Ranch Wagon

    </td></tr><tr valign="top"> <td> <table width="300"><tbody><tr><th scope="row" cl***="code">5</th><td cl***="name">Year</td><td cl***="value">1965 </td></tr><tr><td colspan="3" cl***="line">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><th scope="row" cl***="code">K</th><td cl***="name">***embly</td><td cl***="value">Kansas City, KS </td></tr><tr><td colspan="3" cl***="line">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><th scope="row" cl***="code">48</th><td cl***="name">Body</td><td cl***="value">Fairlane 500 4-Door Custom Ranch Wagon</td></tr><tr><td colspan="3" cl***="line">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><th scope="row" cl***="code">A</th><td cl***="name">Engine</td><td cl***="value">8 Cyl. 289 CID
    Horsepower: 225
    Carbs: 1-4BBL
    Compression: 10.0:1
    </td></tr><tr><td colspan="3" cl***="line">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><th scope="row" cl***="code">267416</th><td cl***="name">Serial</td><td cl***="value">267416 </td></tr></tbody></table> </td> <td><script type="text/javascript"><!-- shoppingads_ad_client = "7eeff2357ef2630cc6b7"; shoppingads_ad_campaign = "b3bd54f3984810139baa6c31f1e4634e"; shoppingads_ad_width = "300"; shoppingads_ad_height = "250"; shoppingads_ad_kw = "1965_ford_fairlane_500_custom_ranch_wagon"; shoppingads_color_border = "FEFEFE"; shoppingads_color_bg = "FFFFFF"; shoppingads_color_heading = "cc3300"; shoppingads_color_text = "000000"; shoppingads_color_link = "008000"; shoppingads_at***ude = "false"; shoppingads_options = "n"; --></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ads.shoppingads.com/pagead/show_sa_ads.js"> </script>

    </td></tr></tbody></table>
Engine: 8 Cyl. 289 CIDThe early A-Code engine was the "other" high output engine. The base engine that the more famous K-Code engine was developed from, the A-Code still put out 225 HP @ 4800 with 305 @ 3200 torque. The A-Code was not a common option. It came equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor. The A-Code was also one of the two engines options available for Mustang GT models.

I then removed the engine tag and looked it up and this is what I came up with...
    CID: 289
    Model year: 1965
    Change level: 5
    Engine Production: December 1964
    engine code: 567-J

Then I removed the axle tag an this is what I come up with.....

Code: WCL-H decoded as an 8" with a locking differential
    Gears: 3.00
Other numbers on tag that I could not ID: 5EC 867

So that was my little to do for today. Correct me if I am wrong anywhere.

My high school car in the 60s was a 65 hardtop,289,auto..Only reason I drove a car that new was a finance guy lived across the street, and his company had repo'd it..high mileage, and I paid almost nothing for a 3 year old car..Painted the grille and the inside of the headlight rings black, put what we called "10 spokes" on it,jacked up the rear end with long shackles, put a sloppy set of duals on it,ran the living **** out of it for years..
I'd love to have another one just like it..
Good times, many interesting things happened in that car while I had it..

  25. I just typed it wrong. I meant radio. My brain and my fingers don't always agree.

If you stretch the definition of stereo a little (ok, alot!) then sure you could get factory stereo. One dash speaker and one in the rear with factory reverb!:D
BTW when I was pulling a gas tank for mine the car I was pulling it from had a rare delete plate. It says FORD across it and matches the rest of the dash plastic. I grabbed it in case I want to use it.
