So I get a part off of a Hamber and get it home shine it up....go to put it on the car, and I notice that my exsisting chrome in other parts of the car is "spider'n" up....I kind of thought maybe the chrome isnt in as good as shape as I thought....but then the new piece that I got, that looked great....after one day in the cold garage has some spider lines runnin through it also!

Am I missing something....Cold, God? Crazy Chrome eating spiders!

What is this that Im seeing?

I will try to put a pic up

Could it be condensation forming / freezing along buffing or polishing strokes??? It doesn't sound like your garage is heated. Can you easily buff the lines out??? And if so, how long does it take for them to reappear???

Where in Minnesota? Are you near Tower were the Govenrment is doing nuetrino and dark matter experiments in the Soudan Mine. Could be a yet undiscovered state of matter that only occurs on chrome. :)

I only polished one piece (and all of em are doing it)....Garage is not heated, I'm afraid if I try to buff them out I will be gone with the chrome...but haven't tried it yet, I did take my hood pieces off and brought them into the house.

**** Rapids, MN (STAY AWAY, chrome eating experiments)

definitely looks like a corrosive agent. do you have any chemicals opened up in the garage? if you're running the car or other cars in the garage, do you have the door open wide enough, where the particles from the fumes don't settle in?

not anything any different from another's garage...but when I start it in the garage the pipes are about 2 feet from the door, and I never close the door on the runnin car

I will have to do a Open Bottle check, I guess!

Try contacting a chrome shop and ask them. They might know a thing or two about what is going on.

Old age may be a big factor.
But it might be the material flashing???

i noticed the chrome also had some pitting which leads me to believe the chrome is porous and the cold is causing it to contract , opening up the lines you see

Makes sense, anyway to prevent it further? other then having to take all my chrome off everytime it dips under 40 degrees?

But even with the good condition emblem I had bought from a HAMBER, very very minimal pitting...it showed marks as well.

I had some chrome do the same thing on me many years ago. It stopped happening when I got the stack of old batteries I had in the garage in the trash. You have anything caustic in the garage? The fumes were more concentrated than I thought and I had become used to that "garage smell". Scary.
