Looking to get my bumpers redone if I can't buff them out. Anyone have a good hookup at decent price? thanks fellas! oh yeah, the bumpers are off my 49 plymouth. josh
I used Denver Bumper with poor results. I had Bridging in the seams of some trim I gave them as well as there was spurs still on the parts and some cracks. I will never use them again.
I was going to have my '55 Caddy bumpers done by them...I asked the GM/supervisor first about the coppering, they said 'no'...then I asked if they did "triple chroming"...the answer again was 'no,' needless to say I'll find somone that specializes in great chrome... [quote-3Deuce40} ]Call Daryl Roberts in Colorad Springs. He just did the bumpers on my dads 49 Ford and 63 Chevy [/quote] As for Roberts, I had him chrome two pieces of my Caddy's front fender spear...it had been sanded/polished/straightened by a guy that specializes in perfecting/polishing stainless steel, which is what most of the trim on my Caddy is...when I got the front fender pieces back, they were both wavy...I was told Roberts doesn't "do any prep" beforehand, they just chrome...but, I have to admit, it did shine. R- I would not use either again.
Daryl Roberts at Bumper Exchange in Colorado Springs on Boulder Street. He has done a lot of work for a bunch of us. My 56 Chevy still has the chrome on it he did in 1976...
Jeff, what he (they) did in 1976 has no bearing on what he (they) can do these days... Denver Bumper USED to be good too...and Ajax plating used to be good as well, Alert Plating used to do a ton of street rod stuff...but that was then...and this is now...!!! R-
Just a little info about plating: Copper doesn't ensure a good finish nor does it enhance durability. It is a tool (a very nice tool) used by platers to make their job easier especially with difficult parts. Acid copper is a high build version (there are 2 coppers used in custom work,) and is the copper everyone thinks of when talking about triple plating. A good thick nickel layer can be used as a replacement, although more expensive and time consuming for the plater. I don't know anything about Denver platers, but just because they don't use copper doesn't mean they won't do a nice job. Triple-Chrome is a real catch phrase that people like to hear, but it is not the end-all be-all of quality plating. Some platers only have a copper strike, which is a very thin base plate used to be able to plate pot metal. They will say "yes" when you ask if it is triple plated. They won't be lying, but they won't have any better quality than a typical nickel/chrome plating job.
Go to ANYBODY BUT those rotten, no-good bas****s at Alert Plating on Santa Fe Drive! Absolutely TERRIBLE work, they won't stick with their estimates, slow to the point of being ridiculous, and just plain crooks!!
Denver bumper did the plating on this bumper, and assorted parts that we added on this car, and all came out great. this bumper we narrowed 15 inches, welded, and ground it ourselves before taking it to them. They straightened it and chromed it. I will use them again...John
Can any of you provide some estimate prices for what you had done? Chrome's a ways off for me, but id like to get an idea of what the cost is now. Thanks.
Last I heard, Alert Plating is out of business--THANKFULLY. I've always heard bad things about them and I'm glad I never used them. I heard they are in big trouble with the EPA because of questionable disposal of hazardous waste materials associated with their plating business. I used to use Ajax all the time until they discontinued chrome plating. I always had great results with them and spent way more money on chrome work than I'd like to admit back in my lowriding days. Never had any complaints with their work as far as quality, estimated return time and their sticking to their prices when all was said and done. They are definitely a stand up business. I was bummed when they discontinued chrome plating, but the improvements the city/state wanted them to do to continue plating was not a feasable expense so they had to stop. Recently my friends and I have been using Denver Bumper. So far, no complaints. Leadsled RnR, I did have Denver Bumper re-chrome the bumpers on my '62 Wildkat back in about '99 or 2000. I can't remember exactly. I'd have to dig into my files to get an exact date. The bumpers on my Buick are very big and I'm sure they were alot of heavy work to do. They charged me just under $900.00 to do them, but keep in mind that was around 10 years ago. They have held up pretty well and I'd use them again if the need ever arises. E
Thanks for the info TotallyCustom & OG lil E, Denver Bumper seems fairly reasonable, looks like they do pretty good work. Where are they located in Denver? Anyone got anything on Daryl Roberts in the Springs prices?
i thought darryl's stuff went to denver bumper for plating? who does his? i had darryl do my entire 51 grill for 4 bills last year. this spring my glove box door and matching gauge panel was 1 bill. i consider it cheap driver quality chrome. certainly not very straight, but it's much better than bumper boyz IMNSHO.
Hey Ray! How ya been? Now that I think about it, i remember you tellin me bout the grill. Im with you though, just lookin for some shine at a reasonable price for a driver.
