ok here goes. Its been about a month since I drove my 54 chevy. its been sitting there collecting dust. last nite i decided to do an oil change. finished with the oil change and when i started the car and alot of black smoke came out of the pipes. I have never seen so much smoke in my life. waited for the car to warm up. put her in reverse and started hearing a clanking noise coming out of the engine. the car turned off. started the car and it would just turn off. did this a few more times and she wouldn't start. gave up so i went to bed and I will deal with it the next day. in the morning she turned on for a few minutes and turned off again. I tried to turn her on and all I get is a clicking noise. I charged the battery and nothing. Just a click. what should I be looking out for?
Wow, doesn't sound promising. Something with the filter blocking the oil passage? Fresh oil dislodging sludge in the pan and clogging the pickup, starving the motor of oil? Did you forget to put the oil in or double gasket the canister, only to lose the oil you put in? Metal clanking and no turning over all imply seized motor
no, hes asking if you forgot the oil or oil plug on your workbench, thus meaning no oil in your engine!!
black smoke is too much fuel, if it was oil it would be blue/white, check carb float for the turning off part could be flooding. clicking noise.. could be that the new oil hasn't had a chance to get up to the valves yet
can you turn the engine over if you pull the plugs and spin it by hand or with a ratchet? if you cant do that....that might be a bad thing.
I,m with Scrap iron! Sounds like it was flooding badly while running "black smoke" and is now hydraulicly locked.Pull the plugs, disable the ignition and see if it will turn over.
Having been sitting for a while it might just be a combination of low battery and flooding. Check and clean your plugs, and make sure you got plenty of battery power, My chevy is a bitch if its been sitting for a while and if its been run in and out of the garage without going for a drive it fowls up spark plugs and runs on 4 cylinders.
First, did you start it and warm it up before the oil change? Not the cause of your problem, but you should do it. If you did, how did it run then? But I assume you didn't start it first. Black smoke is too much gas, sounds like WAY too much! The needle valve must have stuck while it sat, crud built up as the gas evaporated. The excess gas could have washed the walls dry, causing the engine to stick, especially after sitting for a while. Dry rings will cause lots of friction, amplifying any looseness in the engine into a knock. That said, I'm afraid your problem is lack of oil flow and she seized! Not a good thing. BTW, what engine are we talkin' here? The stock 235, or something else?
Did you put the oil in through that little hole in the back? I used to have a chainsaw that made lots of smoke, didn't run well after setting and made all kinds of noised that didn't sound much like a car. Joe here is probably on the right track.
ok i added gasoline on the carb. and the car turned on. right when I push on the gas pedal the car turns off. I keep adding gasoline to the carb and the car turns on but than turns off. i hear the electric fuel pump come on when I turn the ignetion key. should i relace the pump?
Check the basics first .Clogged fuel line ,filters , Could be an out of whack float .And possibly your starter .Or bad gas ,I just went through this on my throwaway work truck ,Drove me nuts and cost me some dough. I replaced my wires and cap and rotor .I also did a compression check I'll advise the same for you and also vacumn guage readings if you can get it running long enough .Read plugs and do compression test first. Also check battery connections for cleanliness and tightness. Also could possibly be something with the valve train .Compression test will tell you this.
