Local auction. They say in the ad it runs. 10 days left. To all you Ford guy, and gals, what am I looking at? I know its a flat head V8 Ford. It is mounted in a trailer, so I would assume its from a welder or generator. What displacement and what parts (hot rod) interchange with the passenger version? Need a motor for my 8N Thanks
Yes, looks like an 8BA / 8RT type. It should have a 'conventional' distributor up in front of the right hand head. It has not got the half-bellhousing that earlier flatheads have, so you may need a full bellhousing or a Mercury bolt-on half-bell if your 8N (tractor?) transmission needs that style.
As the other people have said, it looks like an 8BA which is 49/53 Ford car and 48/53 truck which would be an 8RT. I would assume it to be 329 cubic inches unless it has been rebuilt sometime in its lifetime. In my estimation it is the best one to have, non-floating rod bearings (insert type) and you can get many different adapters/bellhousings that will fit depending on what type of tranmission you want, 3/4/5spd or automatic. The only thing to watch out for are cracks.......................it looks nice and clean, have you or can you hear it run? It can look like this one.................when you get done rebuilding it!!!!!!
Yeah, If you get 90 extra cubes out of a flatty mounted in a generator I would estimate that it's the best one to have also.
Pretty much heard it from all of the above. '49-'53 8BA/8RT. 24 stud. 239 cubic inches. 125 hp I believe. Can get some good speed equipment for these and the best model flatty in terms of power. Looks in not bad knick. A good builder I should say. If you got anything specific to ask, let it rip! HC.
It sez 8BA on the head. It already has the adapter for the early trans bolted on the block. Probably doesn't run too hot, judging by the good paint.(Unless they just painted it for the sale!)
Like others have said, these things are prone to cracking. Most common area is between the intake and exhaust ports in the block at the combustion chamber area. You would need to pull the heads to check this and I doubt that they will let you, so keep that in mind when you bid. They should let you drain the oil and look for chips and water though. Bring a pan and a funnel and tell them that you will pour it all back in when your done. That trailer could also double as a nice engine test stand after some modifications.
Thanks everyone. I haven't heard it run, however the ad says it runs and it is a municipality, so I believe them on that part. I will post if it gets above my price range for those interested. I have a similar one on the shelf from a 50 Ford pickup that ran when we took it out and scraped the truck 20 years ago. Its my brothers and he won't part with it. I haven't pressed him in a while, so if this takes a turn for the worst, I will beg him for his. It would be for my 8N tractor. What would be the going rate for a 8BA in you areas? For a little perspective. Thanks
Oh, and the reason this one appeals to me is that I think it may have a governor. Which you need on a tractor. And, I use and will use the tractor for a couple of gardens and general purposes. Thanks
You can probably get a good idea of the going price for an 8BA by making a pass through the classifieds or searching them for prices on rebuilder type engines. Remember that it is still a rebuilder/core engine as far as your bidding price goes and don't get caught up in a bidding war because of the shiny paint.
Does it have a metal tag on the top of the block on the back side? Does it say Ford Industrial Engine. Like this picture? I have one that was a Schlumberger oil field mud pump motor. It was in great shape and cost me $550.00. I put points, plugs changed the oil and fired it right up. Holds 50psi at idle. There is another pic of it mounted in a '23 I'm building. They make great motors and typically not abused.
this looks like an industrial engine and probably is in great shape, as they never got a lot of heavy use. just ran at idle mostly for welding, pumping, compression whatever. if i was wanting it i would go kind of high for it and roll the dice, like around $800 or so max. i picked up an early flathead some years ago that was used for irrigation and got it for $25 and it had a stromberg 81 carb on it and was in perfect condition. you might get lucky and have one hell of a motor. i don't know about the big flatty in the 8n though, you might want to be looking for a 60hp, jmho.
