How strong are they? I got one out of a 4wd S10. I had an 8.5 out of a 77 nova that i grenaded. Too many peg leg burnouts. Im not looking for dragracing, it'll be a street car with a cammed 305. i already got it set-up and hangin on the springs, but iv been told that it was a mistake to use it. Any imput?
The 7.5 or the supposed slightly stronger 7-5/8 gear will hold up ok to 250 plu hp with non shock load drag strip type driving.I believe the last generation Camaros, like 2002 and older used the 7-5/8 rear with an honest 300 plus HP available on later models.
it all depends how you drive daily driver with a minimum of hooliganizim should be ok my 12 sec cutl*** w/o traction shreds them finally got smart and upgraded onlychevrolets is right if you kiulled a 8.5 not much hope for a 7.5
I was wondering the same thing. They seem to have alot of aftermarket support- axles c-clip eliminators, spools, lockers, girdled covers etc.... How strong can one be made with over the counter parts?
Hot Rod did an article on one about a year ago and said it could be made to handle 400hp at the rear wheels. From what I remember the addition of the girdle was the key to making it last.
Im using one in my build. It will be a mild 305 and TH350 combo and built just for cruzin. there a lot of S10s out there with sbc power doing fine
I would go with the later S10 axle ***embly. I've seen the 7.5's die.... The later one that was used with the 4.3 is much stronger. My Cousin uses his 350 S10 4dr Blazer for plow duty and still has the original 4.3 rear axle. Going on 4 years with no issues at all.
All of the late model F-body cars use the 7 5/8. axle. It was good enough that Lingenfelter only changed the limited slip diff when he hotrodded the Camaros. The 7.5 is little iffy, but not too bad.
