Six days after purchasing the '40 Caddy, my brother bought a '51 Lincoln Cosmopolitan. The car is all original as far as I can tell with the big flathead V-8, suicide rear doors, power windows and seat. The only non-stock alteration seems to be the use of an electric fuel pump. I rebuilt the carb this past monday and couldn't ask for the car to run more smoothly. Yesterday he pulls in and the rear hydraulic power window woundn't go up. I ended up removing the mechanism, pulling the big return spring, reattaching the mechanism and running the window up by hand, then using some vice grips to keep the piston from dropping back down. Backed that up with a piece of wood, and put the door back together. Anyone know of a source for these hydraulic rams. They push up, but have a single wire that operates a valve in the bottom of the ram to release the pressure while the big spring pulls the window back down. Sorry for the long post.
Look in hemming,s there are a few company,s that rebuild hydraulic cylinders. If you don,t have one pm me andi,ll look threw an old one i have somewhere.
Thanks for the information... anyone know the proceedure for checking/adding fluid to the system? No reservoir that I can see. Pump mounts to the driver's side inner fenderwell.
According to the '49-'51 Merc/Lincoln manual the fluid reservoir is held to the pump housing by a "snap on U" shaped wire bail. (I think at the bottom of the pump.) Further on it says remove the reservoir and clean with alchohol then refill it to line marked inside. Page 810 Jim
Thanks Jim.... I have seen the reservoir.... the fluid (at the rear door piston) smells like brake fluid so I guess I can ***ume that's what the hydraulic fluid in it is? Thanks to all for the info.
