I have asked this question before and read all the material that is on this web sight and am still sooooo confused because I need a simple answer a step by step approach if you will. here goes I have a 283, 1967 version with no bell housing just a fly wheel I also have a 5 speed transmission from a 1988 s10 that the guys at windsor transmision say is strong enough for a stock 283 provided I dont abuse it. any way what do I do to get these to work together? remember I am stupid but not dumb! my first project was a 66 nova but all i used was aftermarket stuff that just bolted together. on this project that is not the case so far i have used s10 parets 1928 model a parts as well as a host of scrap yard parts of dubious origin. please help please explain simply take nothing for gtranted thank you so much. plunger100 aka jimmyfred
This may be what you need: http://advanceadapters.com/product/2199/712547.html I would call them and ask.
The only stupid question is he one you didn't ask. Don't beat yourself up over not knowing, everyone started off not knowing and now they know cause they asked. Have you tried to bolt them up already?
My understanding is the old truck bells work as well, provided you have the correct bolt pattern on the T5. Some of the smaller 4 and V6 T5s have a different bolt spacing so they will not bolt up, check this first. There is also a guy in Buffalo that makes an adapter to bolt either(?) T5 to a stock Chevy bell. The opening in the bell is slightly different so you may need a filler ring.
I found this at inliners.org, should be about the same for a small block "I found the tricky part was putting a clutch package together. Notice the splines are shorter than your stock tranny. They are also different size and number. S-10's are likely 1-inch, 14 teeth, V-8 boxes are fine spline. Mine was 1-inch 14 so I used a 11-inch flywheel and an '85 Astro Van 11- inch disc with a pressure plate from a small block. Used a throw out bearing from an SB but for a cast iron fork. Use the stock fork and clutch linkage. This setup put me within about .100 of running out of clutch splines on the input shaft. Enough to dis-engage but barely. I think if I ran out of splines I would have ground down the clutch disc hub a little. This is a gray area and I recommend setting everything up without a pressure plate installed so you can see what's going on for clearance. I found some Astro Van discs very different from others. Any other make disc could work as long as it matches your input shaft and is the right thickness. "
The S10 T5 will have the standard GM manual trans bolt pattern if it is pre-'93. '93 seems to be a transition year, but certainly by '94, you will find the T5 has the Ford bolt pattern. This has nothing to do with which engine it was behind. You should be able to bolt an '88 S10 T5 up to any manual trans bellhousing. The challenge becomes the fact that the S10 T5 input shaft is longer than the standard GM manual trans (muncie, saginaw, etc). The pilot may need to be trimmed, the bearing retainer may need to be shortened, and the input shaft splines may even need to be lengthened. If you're trying to put a T5 behind a SBC, you're much better off starting with a T5 out of a V8 Camaro or Firebird. If you need the S10 shifter position, swap the tailshaft/top cover onto the V8.
when I installed my T-5 I cut a quarter inch off the input shaft and three eights off the bearing retainer...thats all ,been in over a year .
