i want to run a olds rocket in a hot rod and i would like to see pics if any one has them. also does anyone know if there is trans adaptors for a th350 or a 700r4 for those motors. todd
Tanson in NorCal has the adapters. Not cheap. Here: http://www.forwhatyouneed.com/tansonp1.html How about a pic of an Olds in an Olds.
all you guys that wanna run a Rocket engine let me say this about transmissions.you can't get much better than the original hydra-matic,at least up to '55.i have a 324 and hydro in my '54 Olds, and my brother has a 303 and hydro in his '51 Hudson.they both work great,no slipping, shift hard enough to break the tires loose in second with no modification, and bulletproof as far as i'm concerned-george
hydramatics are fuckin cool. you could be like this guy, save some money run a sbc and put 53 olds valve covers on it
That's just gay. There are good reasons for running a TH400 or an overdrive tranny over the early hydro, it all depends on what you want to do. Me, I'll be running the early hydro. Late tranny conversions are also available through Wilcap now, and Dave Smith in Exeter, CA has done them before. Whether you completely rebuild an early Hydro, or you do a late tranny conversion including a rebuild, both options will exceed a grand.
Will early Caddy Hydros work with the Olds? Is anyone running a stick with an early Olds? What choices has a gear jammer got regardin manual setups?

The TH400 is also a great performance tranny, and half the weight of a hydro. You can also get much higher stall out of the converter than out of the old hydro torus. The converter also will lock up, while the early torus will always slip (it's just two shells with fins, spinning next to each other). You can also get a transbrake with a TH400, if you are racing. It's gear ratios are spread nicely (the hydro has a bog between 2nd and 3rd in most instances-- partly due to the gear ratio spread, partly due to the number of actions the bands etc. are performing at that point). The hydro has two oil pumps, which eat horsepower. You don't have the heavy rotating weight of a solid flywheel, or a torus bowl. Lots of benefits to using a TH400. But I'm still gonna use an early hydro.
We just built a 32 roadster at my shop, with an early olds. You can see pictures on my website circlecityhotrods.com. We used an adapter for a 4-speed but ended up using a T-5 5 speed. I really enjoy the 5 speed. I really like the oldsmobile motor, It has a very unique sound. If you need any help or have questions you can call me at my shop. circle city hot rods 714-279-0400 Jimmy White

Give me the Olds too, anyday, with the hydro.
lifes to short to be buggin over whats best.run what you like, and fuck the rest! ive rode in hydro cars, but ive never owned one.thats why i decided to use one behind the 394 im building.im curious.if i dont like it ill change it out.im currently trying to make the car lighter by knocking down some of the options.i keep looking at that tranny.the weight is the biggest drawback for me.i look at the motor seperate from the rest. eric
johnnygringo- that picture with the 303 valve covers doesn't look like my olds at the exhaust ports- what's up with that?
