Projects SHOEBOX Barn Find in Oklahoma

  1. BARN FIND REDUX!
Who said they aren't out there? Longtime friend, Travis, with '49 Shoebox Ford - Deluxe Model - gets ready to send his car down the road after having it since 1974! Originally picked it up in Alabama. One day, he spied it up the hill, off the highway, and spun a U turn to go back. No engine but the guy was ready to sell. Hard to make that long throw column shift after a trucking accident. A Merc long block was on order and a few weeks out. Travis flipped the cash and drug it home and soon slid the new Merc mill in the hole. Few years later he transferred to Oklahoma and flat towed it out here. He added 2x2 setup, dual glasspacks, more chrome and etc. Tranny is an overdrive so the puppy could keep up the pace. Not started for 4 years or so and there it sat out in the barn (shed?). We talked over a year about how maybe I should give the crate a new home. OK, so I says! And there we go out Sunday, myself, son, friend Martin and his trailer. Headed into town to see if we could pull the little guy out. Changed the tires the previous week to a set of freebee junkers just to get it rolling. Yanked it out of the shed and across the yard with my 4WD and to the waiting trailer. Twenty miles to home and now it's in the yard! Needs battery, WWW tires and TLC. Picked up a set of 2.5" rear lowering blocks for it. This car is pretty much unmolested so what ever we do will be minimal just to get it back on the street... Paint it black with tasty flames?
    Enjoy the photos.....

This is how we found it.

All four tires are flat! Spare had air in it though!

Pulling the wheels to get some rollers...

My 4WD snaking it outa the back yard to Martin's trailer

Pit stop for gas and to check the straps.

Couple bucks at the car wash and ya can see the mill. Not started for 4 years or so...

    Blue dots of course

    "Custom" trim

Brakes are OK, probably just need to be pumped up?

Back home in the yard at last. Ugly black walls -this thing needs WWW!

Dash looks dirty, car smells like a musty basement! Odometer reads 52,156 miles?

Rear view in the yard taken the next day.

Vintage Okie tag is a keeper! The #1 stands for Oklahoma County.

Ready for a pick nick?. Found a half full bottle of Jack buried in here.

Full dash shot. I put the fuzzy dice in the glove box for safe keeping!

I'll drag these tires to the next swap meet. They should hold air! These are 15" rims that replaced the original 16".

Number one son here as part of the expedition. Just before dragging it outa the shed.

    Yours truly...

    Home in the back yard...

Congrats, glad to see you got it out of the shed, cos the shed was about to lay itself down on it soon.

Great find! Can't wait to see it. My first car was a '51 Ford conv. Back in 1958 it was in worse shape than your '49 is today.

Cool find, my wife's grandfather bought a 1950 sedan new. I tried to get him to sell it to me for years, it has been in his basement since the 70's. I always went down to see it after Thanksgiving dinner. He never would sell and passed away in 2005. He told me he had already promised it to one of the grandsons, however, the grandson he spoke of is not a car guy. It is still sitting in the basement today. Might be there forever. Wished I had some pics to show you, it is in super shape
