I got 4 hubcaps here that I was told are '40 Ford. But I got 2 different pairs, the one on the left fits my 40 Ford wheels & the one on the right does not. Can anyone tell me why there is a difference & what year(s) they are from? I'm looking for another pair like the cap on the left if anyone can help. Shipping to the UK.
Hubcap on left is stock stainless steel 40 Std. Ford cap for stock wheels with inside ***s. Hubcap on right, the short one, is modern copy to fit wheels with outside ***s OR is a modified original for that purpose OR if the outside edge is not fully rolled, hard to tell in the photos, is simply a stock stainless steel cap with the mild steel insert rotted away.
Thanks for the info Pasadena. The one on right has no indication of edge rotted away or of being modified so I guess it is a repro. The V8 logo is more pronounced & sits a little higher than the one on left.
Some repops were just the outer 'skin'. You could peel off the old, damaged one, and put a new one on, roll the edge, and it looked like a new hubcap. I have seen this with Plymouth caps. If the one on the right is very lightweight and thin, it might just be the skin.
Wheel Smith re-pops the 40' ford cap, and it is smaller than the stock one. It fits their steel wheels.
It would be interesting to know if the one on the right would snap on a 49 and up p***enger car wheel with the "outside" snap.
The one on the right looks like an older repop. It just doesn't fit any wheel I have. I'm going to try it on a new wheel vintiques rim when my friend stops by later today. The real 40 Ford cap is thicker & has more weight to it thats for sure. The repops will sit from now on in my garage with other **** i seem to attract! If anyone has a couple of spare original caps for sale I'm interested so PM me. Thanks to you all for replying.
