Mocking up a triangulated 4 link --got a question... Anyone make their own? How did you make the 45 degree frame bracket? Got pics..? Thanks, Barry
You should check out the search engine. It kinda works. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/search.php?searchid=7703171
I made everything for the triangulated 4 link in my '62 Merc. Here is a photo of the rear suspension. i used the original spring / shock mounts for the lower parallel bars. I fabbed up mounts from square tubing and plate for the upper angled bars.
c'mon scotty bad***... don't need to kick sand on us poor illiterate dudes... btw your is like you it's there but don't work... All i was curious was what did guys make their 45 degree arms out of... peace out1 Barry
I like the way FrozenMerc did the upper mounts - Much cleaner than what I came up with. How thick is the wall of that box tubing?
Hmmm, sensitive. Obviously never had a real flaming. Anyhow, if this is not enough info for you you better go find it yourself. Took me all of 2 minutes............ http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=394891&highlight=link+bracket Pete
I 2nd that!! Im just about to do the 4 link on my 62 galaxie and i think the frame is the same? Frozen, can you start a thread on how you did the whole thing with a million pics?? That would be awesome!! Great job!!
Made a wooden jig that represents the 45 deg. Had it lined up with a string line that was the center line of the ch***ie. The wood was sized the same as my arms so I could hold my frame brackets where thay had to go for tacking and kept at 45 degrees.
ian we did a 61 merc used the front spring perch for the bottom bar and simmerler top bars config had to do a notch to get it on the ground and it had small tires was gona do a kit for these cars but never did i thought the top bar fronts were to close to the bottom bar front so there was pinion change if i did it again i would raise up the front bar fronts so top and bottom bars would be pararell to each other so theres no pinion change we could help you out ian with your galixy http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91803
Thanks guys ... and stripper, no I haven't had a real flaming, guess it's just not really very productive....but makes the sender feel better eh!?! I can get all of that I want from 'the boss'. Not very productive when that happens either Barry
I wasn't flaming you. I have answered this question 20 or 30 times before for every newbie out there that "hates the search engine", or doesn't know the terminology to search, or can't figure out that simple search engines work on simple words like "four" and "link", or others might call it a "four" + "bar". See that little plus sign? That means the search engine is looking for two words, not necesserily in order. I was just tired of typing at that moment, but I feel better now. You probably never thought to search the word "triangulated" because it's about as common as "the" and "of", or maybe you mispelled any one of these because you hate your keyboard. They are kind of hard to operate, I know. (sorry that didn't work, by the way) Here's another link to simplify stuff for you. I made sure it works. Look at the posts 3 & 4 down in the results. It may be helpful. http://tinyurl.com/ya2op4a this one is good, too... http://tinyurl.com/ybheaup
Thanks for the kind comments guys. Ian, Your Galaxie is the exact same frame as my Monterey. The tubing is 2" square with 3\16" wall. I just angle cut them on the chop saw and welded them into place. I have a bunch more pics in my photo album. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=10848 I also used the 2" square tubing for the lower parallel bars that are bolted to the orginal forward spring mounts. Here is another pic during the mock-up stage
Thanks guys, and Merc great pics... Now I got to ask, do you expect any complications with running your exhaust through the 4 link maze? That is the one big issue I see with using the triangulated 4 link and am curious how you will address this... and no I'm not going to do a search to see what the answer is <G> Barry
Exhaust is always a problem with Triangulated 4-links. I am hoping to go up and over the top on mine. There should be enough room between the body and cross member to make it happen. But a good exhaust shop is a must with these things.
OK so I get the 45 degree triangulated link but is there a certain length that works better... I guess what I'm asking is: the 2 triangulated bars are to prevent side to side movement ... so will shorter (say 15" bars ) work as well as a say 22" bars? The reason I am asking is because of just what you've said, fabbing an exhaust system is compromised (possibly) with the longer set-up vs. a shorter one... because of being in the way... Barry
http://home.earthlink.net/~whshope/ Lots of good information and calculators. Might want to check out page 40.
I just ran my exhaust straight under the axle - nice and clean, no clearance issues. It unbolts if I ever need to drop the axle, and if I do need to drop the axle, a few bolts to pull the back of the exhaust is the least of my worries. Why even try to snake it up, over and around the 4 link? Just a pita that adds complication and more heat to the trunk area.
