Anybody remove one of these ??? Is it easy to bolt a T-5 to a chrysler flathead ? I would like to keep the fliud drive but told they were sluggishand mine doesn't want to come loose for some reason
They are not to easy to get out.To get the bellhousing off you have to grt the fluid drive converter off first ,so you can get at the bolts inside the bellhousing. The studs in the converter go thru the crank flange you can only remove them one at a time . Sometimes the studs backout and rub on the block, it can be a bitch.
Call Wilcap he makes adaptors for this engine. He also makes an adaptor to put a 700R very cool setup and very high quality.
you have to consider the reason behind the Fluid drive, and how it's supposed to be used, versus how it CAN be used. it uses a torque converter and a clutch. you only have to use the clutch to engage reverse (since you have to be sitting still) or first. the theory is that you never have to leave high gear in forward travel, just use the torque to pull the car up to speed. think of trying to pull away from a light in 4th with a standard tranny; it's take forever to get the car moving. this is why Fluid Drive has a rep for being slow. folks used it as a stopgap automatic tranny. you CAN start out in first and use each gear as intended, and the car will step out lively. my great granddad had a 47 Dodge with FD and he got so used to it, that when he got a new car (64 Ford Custom, 240, 3spd MT) he wrecked several trannies trying to drive it the same as that old Dodge! Dodge and Plymouth used that same flathead up into the early sixties and they did get Torqueflites by that time. a flathead torqueflite would be easier to install and keep everything MoPar.
The input shaft on the tranny is a mile long and it has to come straight out. That is a fluid coupling in there, not a torque converter.
thanks for everyones input! I think I might have missed one of the bolts... duhh. 62rebel.. I might try to find a flathead with a torqueflite so I can possibly keep it all Mopar. Thanks again Keep the suggestions coming
