In New Orleans this week. Bourbon st is killing me. Need to find something else to do. Preferably automotive. Any ideas?
Damn, I didn't know there were any streets in New Orleans other than Bourban St. I need to visit more often. I too look forward to responses.
I was born and raised in N.O., and the best thing you can do once you've seen Bourbon St, is leave. There really is no car scene to speak of. Also, the only safe parts of the city are the French Quarter/Downtown area, and the the Garden District, anywhere else and you are taking your life in your hands. The place is a sewer. I'd say skip over to the Mississippi coast for the day, hit the casinos. Oh, and Gulfport Dragway runs on Wed. nights.
i was born there and its no different than any other large city as far as car stuff goes yeah it sucks ..
Is American Antique Auto PArts in Kenner, next to Metarie next to NOLA, still in business? Eddie was a real nice guy to deal with and had a good inventory of parts.
well i live here and i can say for certain that the ney-sayers are wrong on all accounts except that there really isn't a car scene here. if you're looking for a good place to hang out and drink, head to the east end of decatur st., bars like "molly's at the market" and "aunt tiki's" are the places i like to hang out at. if you're looking for something a bit quieter and are willing to travel across the river (a five minute ferry ride on the ferry at the base of canal st.) then there's a few bars in old algiers that are worth the look. the closest is the dry dock, not known for good service, but the food is pretty decent. a block from that is, down bouny st., is the crown and anchor, a nice quiet english pub and more or less the neighborhood meeting place. if you go down river from the ferry landing on patterson, you'll find the old point bar, great place for local music with music every night if i'm not mistaken. for those that have "lived" here and talk shit about new orleans, the rest of us are glad you don't live here anymore. with attitudes like that, things don't get any better. also, feeding people misinformation about life here.....come on, i don't do that about where you live. p.s. GEAUX SAINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 9-0 BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!1
Depending on age and if you're with a girlfriend/wife I have some ideas for you. 1st place I would suggest is the D-Day museum (or WWII museum). Haunted History tour @ nite is fun, so is the cemetery tours (daytime). I spend a lot of my time in New Orleans. Had family in Slidell before Katrina. Streets are much cleaner now than before Katrina. (smells much better LOL) PM me if you like, I can suggest some restaurants etc....
Try not to think of New Orleans as the worst city in the U.S., but as the best city in the Caribbean.
I'd go to the D-day museum , they have a few vehicles inside ( no rods though) Google it and see if its something you might be interested in .
X2 Tho' you could always help the shopkeepers and bar owners hose down the vomit and piss from the sidewalks in the morning.
Ok. No car seen. We'll be doing the WWII museum for sure. I guess I'll have to but my liver to work the rest of the week.
The wife and I hit NO last year. We are both early risers and decided to get the lay of the land one morning. We hit Burbon street just in time to see the street cleaners doucheing all of the sidewalks and streets. It still smelled like puke. It was a good expierence but, we won't be going back.
WWII museum is something you need to see. there is also a civil war musuem across the street. the others are right, there is no car scene. get away from the quarter and head uptown to Magazine street, lots of cool bars and little shops.
Don't drink, eat and then eat some more, best food in the country. Lots of good places to eat in the Quarter between Bourbon and the River. Take a ride on the street car from Canal St up St. Charles to the end of the line and back. You will see the better parts of New Orleans. The car scene was big in the 50 and 60 then started to go away. After Katrina it is all but gone.
Morning Call for coffee and beignets. Drago's for great Italian food. Betsy's for a great pancake breakfast. Harbor Seafood in Kenner. The Tiffen Inn on Veteran's for breakfast.
There is indeed a "car" scene in the N.O. area. It is more suttle than most places for a fact. There are cruise nights most weekends, mostly on saturdays. There is a monthly cruise night at the mall in Metairie, and a monthly also at lake town in Kenner. Check the friday edition of the paper in the automotive section for a listing of the weekend activities. The Back to the lake event this year had more than 500 entries, with many hamb type vehicles among them. Most car guys in the area are older and many still have rides they have owned for many years. I can find at least fifty guys in my area that have really nice rides indifferent stages of progress or completed. The younger guys are into tuners, although there is a large contingent of v8 mustang guys. Recently at a local cruise night I saw a group of fellows talking and among them were three retired top fuel and afx racers. Hurricane Katrina delt the car community a severe blow. At the time it was of course overshadowed by the loss of lives and community devestation. The area of challmette and St. Bernard was really hit hard due to their locations, as was lakeview in Orleans. Many vintage, musclecars and hot rods were totaled or severly damaged. Some were parted out, but many are being rebuilt. All cities have problems, and yes New Orleans has more than many. I live here, and do not care about political corectness. Take away the drug element who kill oneanother with impunity and the city would be a wonderful place to live as it was when I was a kid. MickeyC Metairie Louisiana
with that, those are the VAST majority of the murders in the city, and always have been. this isn't the first time new orleans has laid claim to the murder city capital, that torch gets passed around every few years. for the most part innocent folks like us are safe.
I'd go to Deanie's up by the lake. Best grub in town. Like they said ride the street car. Experience the roughest streets in the country other than Detroit. I'd go to Pat O'Brien's too but you said you already did the Burbon street stuff. Take a cruise out to the Tabasco plant on Avery Island. Grab a bite at Mulate's in Lafayette if it's still there, if not there's one in New Orleans. Avoid Pascal's Manale like the plague. Over priced and not worth a damn. Like the other dude said go over to the Gulf coast and hit the casinos.
Yea....go to some of great speed shops downtown, but beware, some of those folks can sell snow to the Eskimos! Ha! I used to live in Kenner, 2 blocks from the Airport right off Veterans.........
