I found this and might be able to go check it out tomorrow. I called the guy on it and he has no clue what it is. All I know is that it is a Hemi and would like our Hemi Gurus name that Hemi. I know it has a 2 barrel carb on it but thats about it. Been a SBC guy all my life and looking to go to the other side with a Hemi. This is the only pic that I have and I know its not much,But I know some of you guys that know these motors will be able to figure it out. The motor is about an hour and a half away so I would like to know what I will be looking for when I get there. Also what would you pay for it unstuck and stuck. Please help a brother out.
Get the code from the pad between the cyl. heads behind the water pump and look up what it is at the Hot Hemi Heads web site. That is the only way to be sure. There were so many Dodge, DeSoto, Chrysler hemis from '51-58 including trucks and industrial engines.
I think it is a DeSoto. Probably a low deck one. I would have to talk to myself to get up to $50 for it if stuck. Probably busted cylinders and rusty small heads. Turning it might be worth $200. DeSotos are the hardest to find parts for, espcially speed parts. You would be much better with a Chrysler or even a Dodge. If you go look at it, print out the engine serial number prefix code from HotHeads. You might sell the covers and wire protectors for more than I would give.
thinking it's a Desoto...last one I sold to a buddy for a $100 was stuck - old age I thought...it had a busted cylinder wall we figure water got in...after that I didnt collect the bill...should be able to see a pad on the front drivers side...get those letters and #'s...that will tell what it is....
Its over an hour away,So I wont have access to look it up. Just wanted to make one trip. Thats why I posted up what I had. I thought they were easy to identify if you knew what you were looking at.
Your pic is ****. Take the code list so you will know what you are looking at if you go take a look. Can you tell a 283 from a 327 or 350 from a top only pic? Hemi's are much tougher. Field engine=rust and busted block.
A Hemi is a Hemi, its worth giving the guy1 bill, no more for unknown quality or size. After you get it...........you can turn yourself a small profit just selling the parts.... If its 1/2 way decent......keep it yourself! After you've set behind a really healthy Hemi powered car, even if its small CID, it'll open your eyes on up. With a alum. intake, 2 small 4's on it......a healthy cam and some headers......you can realistically see 1 horse per cubic inch easily! No ****tin'! I used to specialize in Blowin' those little monsters! Give my a 354 or a 392 anyday with a old 6-71, some mild parts and you'll have about 580 streetable horses ready to romp!
Why not make it really simple: just call the guy and ask for the engine code - it's stamped on the rail in front of the valley cover. Post it here and you'll have your answer as to which one it is in nanoseconds.
I actually did that when I called the guy. Was the first question out of my mouth after I asked what hemi it was. His answer was I dont know nothing about Hemis and If I was interested in it to just come and look at it.
You ought to go and get it.......its good tradin' material.....if you don't somebody else will.......
From the way the water byp*** hose runs from the intake to the water pump and the size of the water pump, and the style carb I'd say thats a 331 or 354 Dodge truck engine. Was there any lettering where some one spray painted the valve covers? Firepower, Imperial, Industrial, Red Ram, etc? The truck and Desoto valve covers were blank, the Desoto wire covers would say Fire Flite or Fire Dome. Last, when can some of my Hemi friends and I come with an 18 wheeler to pick up a load of $50 to $200 Hemi's that some were talking about? There are people that will pay $200 for Desoto valve covers to make fake Hemi's out of SBC's. Anyway, good luck, if you get it there are a lot of knowledgeable people on The H.A.M.B. that will help you with it.
even if the block is frozen/stuck/ cracked , you can strip off other outside parts and vend for a few dollars to those that really need the parts. rockers and internals are not being replicated either.
when numbers or other I.D. is not possible, you can MEASURE the block deck height and length of the crank or heads / cam... desoto VS dodge VS chrysler are all different lengths and heights.
Yeah they're ****ola......real HARD to get parts so if ya don't want it PM me and I'll take it off the old bloke's gnarly hands.... Rat
The wire covers and two barrel indicate DeS Firedome. I'm with screamin' metal & rat. If you can get it for $50 to $100, you CAN'T lose your shirt parting it out, you MAY make a few bucks & help guys who need parts, and -- who knows? -- you may wind up with an actual rebuildable motor! If I could buy a core Hemi already out of the car for that money within 100 miles, I'd already be bihind the wheel & on my way. They don't make 'em any more, so I'd gamble $50-100 any day on a Hemi!!!
These are the 2 Stupidest answeres i have EVER seen on a Hemi Post !! Things are only Hard to find if you Relie on Hot Heads & The HAMB for your only Source of Hemi Parts. You must Hunt EVERYWHERE for Vintage Speed Parts for all 3 Hemi Familys. I'll Take all the Junk $50.00 DeSotos you find Andy ... And By the way ~ Can you post up a pic of Your Hemi ?
I for no other reason it's worth a $100 bucks to clean it up, paint it and have a great piece of garage art....
I have been trying tofigure what the 2 rectangles were. Looks to be some type of sticker at one time. Would anyone know what was there?
I agree! That is entirely possible! Also, since nobody EVER does a search when they are about to ask what a Hemi is worth, I will just link you to a thread of several OTHER people asking what various Hemis are worth... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3867297#post3867297
The only stickers that Dodge Hemis had (that I know of), was the Super Red Ram decal. The engine was a 270.. Duane.
Bingo,That solves that mystery. Thanks Bill, Now does anyone know anything about these engines? I found the same pic on a Dodge website also. But it does not have lots of info on the motor other than the years that it was in the trucks. Are these truck motors ok to run in a Hot rod?
I have the Hot Heads print out here in front of me and it does not list any of the power giant motors.
