Got an edelbrock 1406 on my stone stock chevy 305. All of a sudden its got a dead skip while idling. It contiues to skip until just above idle, then it runs fine. When i screw the idle screw up it skips until it gets to the spot where it starts firing on all eight.it's also started to backfire when i'm at speed and let off the throttle. It never did this before. I just changed the plugs and that did not help. The edelbrock i had on it before this one did the same thing. I just changed carbs and the problem went away..........until now. Damn if know whats wrong! Somebody help me!! Thanks ed

Doesn't sound too much like a carburation problem, I'd lean towards a spark/ignition problem.

I concur, bad plug wire somewhere, or a micro crack in the cap. Another thing that will do this is a sticky valve. Higher RPM's will force it closed and make it less noticable.

I have one doing the same thing. I pulled the holley off the wifes t-bird (shhh don't tell her) and put it on, and it ran fine. Put the edelbrock back on and same shit. Plugs, wires, and cap all new. Can't seem to find any vacuum leaks. Think I'll just rebuild one of the Holleys over at the shop, and call it done.

the edelbrock i had on it before acted like this, then i put one on that my friend let me have and the problem was gone. Now its doing the same thing again. I still think its something to do with the idle or maybe accelerator pump. Just bought new cap, roter and plugs, we'll see what happens by process of elimnation.

  8. dirt in the idle circuit somewhere? I would begin with some carb cleaner and some patience.

Hot damn! I got it fixed. I took the carb apart and cleaned the junk out of the bowls, the needle and seat, the idle circuit. Actually it was'nt that bad, but i guess all it takes is one little piece. Thanks to all of yall for the input! I just love a thread with a happy ending!!! PS I GUESS AJMOPAR WINS THE PRIZE. THANKS AGAIN. ED

    Glad you got it!
You just cannot have too many fuel filters on these things.
