So I was bored this afternoon and took a trip to one of them Home supply centers, and found myself in the chain link fence section. There on a shelf with the rest of the ugly hardware is a box full of those aluminum post caps. Hmm, looks like it would make a fine steering wheel horn cone! Paid the $5 and off I go to the garage. I cut a ring from some s**** exhaust pipe, and a circular sheetmetal disk, grabbed the mig, and, well, here's some pix. Not bad for 20 minutes of work and $5.

    Here's the fence post cap.

After welding from the backside and bolted up to the removable steering wheel/hub.

    Cap installed via friction-fit!

And the finished product installed on the column.

A little polish, and 1 step closer to finished! :)

you should have completed the theme and covered up that nice column with a fence post.

I tried it. It looks great! If I didn't already have baby moons, I'd do that.

That's what I used on my wheel, but I cut off the "ridge" and everything below it. Sometimes less is more. $1.47 at Home Depot.

Nice. How did you mount it to the wheel?

Similar to your method. A plate with a sleeve and hole for a screw to hold the cap on, held down by the bolts that bolt the wheel to the adapter. Here's a not so great photo that was on my iphone.

The inside diameter is 2-3/8", OD is probably about 2-5/8". To fit my rear axles, I'd need to make a bushing on the lathe; the axle hole is a bit larger. Same for the front, but the opposite; would need to turn an adaptor to fit over the bearing hub. Both would be easy to do on the lathe. Maybe if I get bored again......it would give people more reasons to make fun of me, anyway! :D

I like that. Could be a good housing for a tachometer.

    pretty cool idea!

  30. So you'd need to fab something up to press it into the backside of the wheel???
