I would refurb a vintage one and put it in. There are several threads on vintage heaters from all makes. I put a 40's Chev heater in my roadster with a 12v computer fan and it is awesome!

Mojave makes a decent aftermarket one - but they do not have the character an older heater has...

40's and older heaters are very cool. not sure why someone would consider putting some modern box in their HOT ROD. first thing I'd do is find out what heater your car came with and go from there.

Just bought one from Southern Rods and it keeps it mighty toasty!

If it's just heat you want, I've been very pleased with the store brand mojave style heater that Summitt sells. I put one in the '46 pickup at the end of last winter and wondered why I waited so long. Sturdy metal case materials and a great price, too.

I agree with 54BOMB, restore a vintage one. I also did that for my 40', I found on fee-bay, it was cheap, small, and looks great.

Well, depending on the amount of space you need to heat, here's what I did for my 32 project pictured in my avatar. Heat exits from the bottom on this unit so I trimmed out the bottom of the 46-48 Ford car enclosure. I wanted something vintage but did not want to go through the trouble of getting a 12-volt motor, etc, etc. I don't know how it works since the car is not on the road yet.

It's an old Tropic-Aire for my coupe. Found it at a swap meet and cleaned it up a few years ago. Someday when the cars done, it'll keep me toasty. I used a pancake computer fan in the back also.

It is a rectangle. The corners of the tank are rounded off to fit in the round housing.

I have one of the Mohave heaters in my car, works well! And innexpensive kinda.

But I do agree, the old style look awesome, but if its gonna be hidden it doesnt really matter.

All of these opinions are great, restore a vintage one X 100... but... who makes a new good heater other than Speedway?

edit: google pops up quite a few of them

  27. Check with your local heavy-duty (semi) parts supplier. That is where I work and I got mine from. Compact enough to go behind my dash and even has a defrost option if you choose to use it.

One more vote for the Vintage Air compact unit. Small enough to be out of the way and it will toast you on a cold day. Fuelpump had one in his '50 sedan and it worked great.
