When using Houdaille or Ford lever action shocks as used in the 39 Ford what fluid do you use when refilling so as not to ruin the original seal and cause leakage around the shaft? I would think it would have to be synthetic am I on the right track? Thanking you for your replies.

The oil for hydraulic jacks is the proper fluid to use. Old cans used to have on the label that the oil was for hydraulic jacks and shock absorbers.

If you need to refill them you already have leaking.

Go to www.earlyfordv8.org go to forums and ask your question. Hydraulic Oil comes in many different viscosities you will get an answer to your question for the original grade of oil. Depending on the amount of wear in a seventy year old part you may have to go to the next thickest grade.

It's a french name. "Hoo dye" is indeed the correct pronunciation. :)
