Hi my son and I just acquired a 1927 Chrysler 4 door and are gonna build ourselves a rat rod. It has a solid axle on it which seems fairly sturdy but I would have to upgrade the kingpins and spindles to something with brakes on it. Can anyone suggest something that would fit this axle? Or...do I need a later axle that has spindles with backing plate and brakes? This of course means changing steering parts as well.....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as we have never done this before. thanks in advance Jim
rat rod. huh.sorry bud not many people on here take kindly to that name.cant help you with the axle but this bit of info could sae you on here(no rat rods here)
sorry didn't mean to offend with a "title"....I just happen to like the look of the lowered unpainted hot rods....call it what you want but we think they are very cool and thats what we want to build.....the car will not be unsafe just not painted.
Well, I'm thinking you haven't spent enough time reading on here to realize that "rat rod" is not tolerated. That would probably explain no responses...
you should post some pics of what you are working with. i think your car should have parallel leaf springs in the front. if you want to keep that set up, you may have to go with a different axle to get decent brakes. compare the space between the springs with an early 50s chevy truck. or... depending on your frame width, it may be possible to install a model A crossmember and go with a standard spring over set up.
As i read it you have an original front axle without brakes. So did someone else remove the brakes or did the car never have front brakes ? Then it would be a lot older than 1927. Post a pic.
The '27 Chryslers had brakes on the front, even hydraulic ones, the problem is the spindles and kingpins. They are "backwards", that is, the two kingpin bosses are on the axle, not the spindle. An axle swap will be necessary to get modern brakes and wheels to work. A '46 Chev pickup axle is very close to the right measurements. On my '26 I am narrowing a '70 Dodge pickup axle about 6" and getting the local welding shop to weld it. I want to keep the Dodge wheel pattern to match the small Cordoba rear end. If you are using Chev wheels, a 4X4 S10 rear and '54 hubs on a '46 axle will work great.
early thirties mopar might be a close match for an axle with brakes. a friend of mine has a '25 dodge that has no front brakes from the factory like you describe.
