Can't believe my buddy Larry's car ended up in a mag, page 54, Freiburger talked with us for a while on the salt then he contacted Larrys son to finish the article, great vintage pics from 58 and during restoration. Was honered to help and be along for the the trip to bonneville. Hell of a story.
Yes ... Mr.Granatelli is still with us (86 years young) ... here's a pic of Andy with HAMBer StillOutThere's 1960 Chrysler 300F Special Gran Tourismo:
For clarification, the pic of Andy G with my car was taken in 1987. Andy's interest? He had taken his own 300F Special Gran Turismo to Daytona Beach and run 179.4 mph on the sand in Feb of '61. At Bonneville later that year he went 189.99 mph on the salt. Those of course were with twin Paxtons on his car. See the Feb. '62 Hot Rod Mag for the Paxton ad touting the UT achievement. Stock cars like mine "only" would do 165 mph on Chrysler's home test track. Anyone have a dual Paxton setup for a Chrysler long ram intake car?
...I really enjoyed that article. The cover car story is equally cool, as well as the 50+ g***ers. and all the rest of the mag ...a great issue!
No subscriptions available to Hot Rod Deluxe yet,one of the best out there in my opinion, maybe in the future? Gerry
Great story wished I would have seen it at speed week, so many cars. It would have been great to see it up close.
"maybe in the future?" Doubt it, talked to Dave Freiburger about subscribing to HRD at the Maxton Banquet last April. He said nothing was in the works at that time and doubted there ever would be. Guess we will have to keep checking the news stands. Really enjoyed the story on the Olds. Great to see the old stuff run again, helps maintain youthful enthusiasm in my getting older body.
Special thanks to Ron Jolliffe our tech inspector who wanted to make sure we were able to run safely(but not break his personal 50 olds record) and the ZR1 corvette team for the lead weight we borrowed, hope the tires worked out for them. And the guys with the Pan American Lincoln who were eager to help and befreinded us for the week. It was refreshing to have fellow racers be as helpful as they were on several occasions we were offered parts, tools or steel to make sure we were able to p*** tech.
T Achilli, That was a great story on your friends Oldilac ! I like the part where they broke in the motor by driving the car at 120 all the way from SLC to the salt ! Now that's a break in period ! 41 Dave
