House Bill 1368 : Requires drivers on a multilane highway to remain in the right lane unless they are p***ing other vehicles. It does not apply to those driving in the far left lane because of traffic conditions, flow or road configuration.
They are currently enforcing this new law. Went in effect Nov. 1

    Are they really enforcing it?

Montana drivers are pretty good about staying in the slow lane (I think it came from the days of no speed limit) and I believe we have the same language but I've never seen it enforced.

I had a muscle car way back when and I hung Boeing surplus aircraft landing lights behind the grill, that seemed to get pokes attention, but after a couple months it smoked the paint on the grill.

The law has been like that here for MANY years, but never enforced.
The closer you get to Toronto, the worse the drivers are.

It was never against the law here before, it was simply a recommendation. Now, it's law, and they are enforcing it. 'Bout damn time!

So who gets to decide when these conditions exist, you or the cop that wants to cite you for" driving in the p***ing lane" even in a bumper to bumper traffic jamb?

Also, how many cars/trucks can you p*** in a row before it's determined that you are just staying in that lane?
Do you have to move back over between each p***ed car?

Jus thinking about this relative to the California bicycle law that says a cyclist has to stay as close to the curb as possible unless the side of the road is potholed or littered with tire puncturing type trash or otherwise unsafe to ride on and under those conditions the cyclist car ride in the right traffic lane itself.
It also specifies that the bicyclist gets to determine when those conditions exist, (not another driver or cop.)

Just bringing those thoughts up because they may be relevant in the random application of this law.
Back in 77, I got a ticket in Colorado for driving in the p***ing lane Actually the cop stopped me on radar for doing 62 in the then 55 limit on the interstate.:eek: and he was "nice" to me and only wrote me for driving in the p***ing lane... I didn't argue because he probably would have written me for both if I tried to reason that if I was speeding faster than anyone else could go I must have been "p***ing" them but I kept my yap shut since the ticket was only $10... But then it showed up on my CA record and because of the point my insurance went up ten times the amount of the ticket! and it's not even illegal here!

The Highway Patrol is the deciding factor. They are the appointed enforcement on the highways.

I grew up and learned to Drive in Oklahoma. We were taught to drive in the right unless p***ing, I was just driving on I-35 In August, and noticed how nice it was that the slower cars were in the right lane...Try driving in So. Cal sometime. you'll definitely come up on a car (usually an astro van) going 45 in the far left lane of a six lane highway.

It was made into law here and I hate to say it but both of my kids are some of the worse left lane bandits I have seen.
So far as far as I have seen enforcement is sporadic at best though. I drive to work at 4 am so traffic isn't an issue if I beat the guys getting out of the Casino and heading home. Usually they blow past me at about 15 over the speed limit so it's sit back and cruise a ways behind them and grin and sip my drive to work cup of coffee.

I live on the Ohio River, just across from Kentucky.

The standing joke around here is: "What do England, Japan and Kentucky have in common?"

Answer: "The left lane is the slow lane."

If this law were enforced in N. E. Kentucky, they'd need few hundred more state troopers!

Drive right, p*** left. Seems simple. Now, if we could get the idiots who, when I p*** somebody (it's especially bad when pulling the trailer) to immediatly try to p*** me on the right before I can get back in. Boy, does that get exciting...

I'm pretty sure thats a law here in PA, but I've never seen it enforced. Driving some of the highways near where I live (I travel between harrisburg and philly a lot) it gets nuts. Sometimes your in the right lane doing 85-90 and people are p***ing you (for real, not joking. And more often than not its a middle aged mother with young children in the car) and you come up on a car in front of you doing 75, so you get in the left lane, and all the sudden BRAKE LIGHTS!!!! and you have someone on the phone or text messaging at 64mph in the left lane next to a semi doing 64.5mph. No wonder so many people get killed around here...

will they be lenient if you're driving in the left lane to keep from dragging a hole in your oilpan on I-44?

Sad that it takes a law to put common sence into effect.

Personally I haven't seen a change yet. I drive the turnpike between Okc and Tulsa at least twice a week. I hope it is enforced. Drives me crazy!

Here in Louisiana too. Just recently went into effect. The law also makes it a requirement to use the left lane when p***ing a cop who's pulled over a motorist on the right shoulder, or slow way down if traffic doesn't allow it.

No ****! The truck lanes (right lanes) here are wallowed out from heavy trucks and summer heat on the asphalt, really bad for bikers and anything low.

Keeping all the traffic in the right lane is not the smartest thing to do in my opinion. Just think about it for a moment, merging and exiting traffic is usually to the right. This makes traffic constantly speed up then slow down and is especially hard on trucks.

If normal traffic flow was in the left lane under normal conditions then traffic would flow better and if entering or exiting you could enter more smoothly. Toll roads around here have got it right as the left lanes are for EZ tag users and the right for merging and pay tolls.

last year coming home from the hamb drags the OHP enforced this law on the turner turnpike between Tulsa and OKC.

There was a bunch of us including semis tied up behind two vehicles with blue hairs going 65 in the left lane....traffic was bunched up behind them. I finally got around and topped a hill to find three OHP officers sitting there. As I went by they pulled out and pulled over both of those slow moving vehicles. I guess one of the semis must have radio'd ahead.

Thats the way we were all taught to drive.... slow right p***ing left.. its in the drivers manuals here in NY... in whatever language you want to take it in. NY is full of people who have no clue how to drive.... or read for that matter.
As far as enforcement it is going to affect guys like us more than the *****s who drive slow. Just add it to the speeding and unsafe lane change tickets.

Most Americans would freak if they drove in Germany on the Autobahns. You WILL stay in the right lane, unless you are p***ing, or else you'll get run over by the guys p***ing at 200 km/h (120+ mph) in the left lane. And the Polizei DO ticket!!!

    I loved driving there!
