You can get to my website here: Steve Boutte Kustoms

I don't have the separate "shop" pages happening yet, but you can see a bit of what I'm currently working on.

Cool cars, Steve! Hey, I was wondering how you "rechrome" sectioned bumpers, or create trim with chrome on it. How do you keep it from looking like aluminum spray paint?

These cars are all *****in. Are you just using bondo for the shaping?

Three ways. One is a product called Bare Metal Foil. It's a very thin foil with and adhesive back. Stick it over the trim, cut off what you don't need.

Another is a paint system called Alcad. A series of paints that when done actually does look like chrome.

Or, there are companies that will rechrome plastic parts. You can send the parts out to chrome just like you would with a 1:1.

I use the green putty from Sqadron brand. It comes in a tube that looks like an old school miniature toothpaste tube. They have a hite putty type as well, but it is very chalky and I don't like it at all. Be careful not too lay on too much green putty all at once, or it will bite into the plastic of the kit and burn it a little.

For shaping, I rough it all out with nail files, then go back and fine tune it with some regular sandpaper.

For trim, I make it out of half round solid stock from Evergreen. Most hobby shops carry their great products. Pick the desired size, bend it around a little bit, glue it on, paint the car, and then go back over the trim with bare metal foil.

I will post some more pics of the Euro inspired '40 Ford tudor as I build it. But, I never really touch these things anymore.

Even when I last worked on it, I was at a brainfart stage as to which direction I should go with it. Should I go '60s style, like the El Matador '40 coupe, or the El Conquistador '40 coupe in the Barris books, or should I go back to the late 1940s European coach type body style?

Either way, give me some suggestions, and pics/drawings, and I will make this car HAMB inspired with the build style...

Thanks! Exactly what K&R said. The trim is done with the thin adhesive backed foil, & the bumpers, grilles & hubcaps can be done with Alclad chrome. You paint the part with gloss black enamel, then later, mist on a few coats of the chrome paint until the black is completely covered up. The glossier & smoother the base coat looks, the more the part will end up looking like chrome. Unfortunately, it's not the most durable stuff, but works well for models. Too bad there's not something easy like that for 1:1 cars.

The bumpers, grille, & hubcaps on the '50 Merc were done with Alclad, as well as the bumpers on the '60 Olds & '59 El Camino that I posted the other day.

This was my first attempt at a "diorama" for a model. It doesn't look so pixelated when you see it in person.

Yup....Steve really does build some BAD *** models.

If any of you modelers want to show off your stuff and see other peoples...check out the message board at www.modelcarkits.com

Steve posts there, so do I, StevesGalaxie used to, Gowjobs also, and if you pay close attention you'll find Fat Hack around too...though you gotta find him for yourself [IMG]

If you can appreciate the work into a lot of the stuff posted and overlook -some- of the subject matter, you'll love it. Look for posts by "Hollywood Jim." He's doing a VLV/Billetproof style diorama.

Not sure on that chevy truck. Search eBay:

    eBay models

I just shot the clearcoat on this ****er tonight. Seriously screwed up the paint on the drivers fender, but fixed it. And if you don't know what you're looking for, you can't tell.

This one was inspired by SteveB's Olds. These pictures don't do the color justice.

  28. Awesome, awesome models guys!

Laidoutford, you are one very prolific custom model builder. Let's see more!

    Steveb, beautiful work, outstanding!

I got a suggestion: We should have a day when all the HAMB model builders show off their latest creations, just like the Friday Art Show.

I propose it be on Sunday and we call it something like "Model Car Sunday" or "Super Model Car Sunday". Whaddya all think? ........and we keep it all Traditonal Hot Rods & Customs, of course.

Think about it, something to look forward to and all the model posting will be in one place.

Lets please not have "super" in the ***le [IMG]

Got this kit off eBay. Another of my "one day I'll have a real one..." builds. Just mocked up in the pics.

  30. Naw Eric, it don't have to have "Super" in the ***le. [IMG]

I ripped off that ***le from a actual modelcar swap meet we used to have here in Hillside, Il. for twenty years. It's gone now but, it used to be thee primiere modelcar event in these parts.

But, what do ya think about the idea? Your one of our model heavy hitters around here.
