I was on search looking for the guy that makes Saginaws into top loaders and it occured to me that maybe there was a T5 or other modern top loader that would fit up in place of a Saginaw 4 speed. My engine is set way back, and my shifter is in the wrong place. I don't know if one of the new top loaders would make any difference. Just looking for alternitaves. Thanks, Mike
T-5 will bolt right in using the proper clutch disc use STD camero box if you want the shifter back use carmero box with s-10 tailshaft housing to move shifter forward I've got a box on the bench at the shop now w/s-10 tail if you need a measurement on the shifter Tony
Transmission mount is in the same place? That would be cool. And I'll bet that the S10 top will put the shifter in about the middle of the transmission. There may be a T-5 in my future, they are pretty common aren't they? If I'm a grown up will it live behind a 454 in an 1800# roadster? I'm beginning to think it might be easier to install a T-5 than to jury rig some kind of shifter to come out in the right spot in my '29 A Thanks, Tony
His name is Dale Wampler. his business card reads: HEAVY DUTY saginaw 3 and 4 speed overdrive 1932-48 ford flathwead Dale Wampler cell -580 591 - 2854 He takes an old ford top loader 3 speed shifter, cuts the top out of a saginaw trans builds a mounting plate, adapts the shifting forks and bolts it together.... also additional machine work for a complete early ford change over!! they shift nice, nice and tight. looks like a nice neat job...I'd love to have the saginaw 3 speed overdrive w/ the " Wampler conversion", and it may happen!!!
Overall length is 2 3/4 longer than sag... and trans mount is 1 5/8 back further Pretty common and If you drive it like like you own it I know Itll be fine My father has had one in his 49 Olds coupe for 2 years now about 3600lbs Just drove 1500 mile round trip 2mo ago Here is one with s-10 tail 11 3/4 inch from bell to center of square for shifter Tony
In the latest Street Rodder, on page 70 is a pic of a forward mount shifter for a Muncie. Says it came from T&F Shifter,Lebanon, Oragon. Maybe they have something for other trans's. Not a good pic, can't see enough of how he did it.
This must be the guy that was at the Arlington swap meet a few weeks ago. I walked right by him,and since I was looking for windshield parts I never even made the conection! I'll call him after the holidays. While we are on this subject, how would a three speed do behind a 454? My left handed logic says the difference would be how far apart the shift points would be,right? Exploring all my options. Should have done this earlier. Thanks, guys
Thanks for the pics Tony. Now would be the time, while I'm bracing up the trans crossmember. The shift tower would be in the right place. Now it boils down to cost. I'm retired, and although it's not a "shoestring" build, let's say I can't just get out the credit card either.
Any healthy 454 will be over the torque limit of the T5 - it may last if you baby it ( or have very slippery rear tires)! More robust solution is a Tremec TKO 500 or 600 5 speed, but thet are pricey. Most of these 5 speeds are larger in diameter than the old Muncie/Saginaw trans - so floor (or other) clearance may be an issue.
Thanks for all the help, guys!! I THINK I have the answer. At least for the moment. I found T&F shifters on the net, and their shifter will solve my problem for around $450. And, I don't have to change directions. I already have a freshly rebuilt Sag 4 speed, and I've built a crossmember to fit it. There have been enough changes in the original plan so far to slow down the project to a crawl. Thanks, again
Yeah, what he said... If ya drive HARD an got big sticky tires, (and stick with 3 pedals) the richmond is a minimum!!! I've blown 3 clutches and 2 transmissions with my blown 502 inna firebird pictuers of build/mayhem:http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/journal.php?action=view&journalid=8958&page=1&reverse=1 build strong!
3 clutches and 2 transmissions!?! No problem with traction huh!! I'll bet that bird is one nasty som*****!! You guys need to check out this web site. I started a '65 Biscayne restoration once...I realized I wasn't that much of a masochist! Hot rods are wayyy easier!
I asked a similar question today and was told an offenhauser X-shift is the right answer.. See thread here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=422707
I did, just thought people on this thread would be interested in an original speed part made out of unobtanium that would accomplish the same thing.
