What is the very best time you ever spent in a garage

1. So in amongst the my life really sucks, and lets hear about the very worst thing that could possibly happen to you in a given situation I was thinking that something a little up beat may be in order.
<O:p</O:p
So let’s hear about the very best time you have ever had in the garage or shop:
<O:p
I’ll start it off if you like.
<O:p
There are a ton of really cool things that have happened in my life that either happened in a garage, shop or pit.
<O:p
But the story that will always stick with me as a very good time in the shop happened the summer I was 7. I was supposed to spend about a month in ffice:smarttags" <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[IMG]Oregon with my uncle we lived in theS.F. Bay</ST1:place Area. The Ol’ Man was going to drive me up on the weekend.
<O:p
Before we could go he decided that the engine in the roadster needed a freshening. On Friday evening he came home and got me in the shop truck. He already had the engine out of the roadster and the basic machine work was done. He took me down to the shop to spend the evening with him.
<O:p</O:p
Some buddies showed up, and there was a bottle of rum or two to be passed around. Lots of laughter and bad language was shared into the evening. I recall Sonny giving me a sip of rum from his glass. The next thing I remember was waking up on the creeper, an old beat up leather jacket was thrown over me and Uncle Sig was handing me a cup of coffee and a donut. He hollered in a big booming voice, “Hey Wolfe is up!!” The Ol’ Man shouted that there had better not be any cream or sugar in that coffee (there was of course).
<O:p
Bruce [my foster brother and quite a bit older than I] came and picked me up and put me on the bench, zipped up the jacket. Bay Area mornings used to be a little chilly.
<O:p
The Ol Man fired the roadster off. I recall the engine going together but they must have buttoned everything up while I was asleep. He spent about 20 minutes tweaking and tuning. Sonny, Sig and Bruce stayed out of the way but the Ol’ Man made sure I was in there, he answered the millions of questions I had. He had me set the idle, as I recall, I turned the screw until it sounded about like I thought it should. Then the Ol’ Man fiddled with the carbs a little more. Made me put a hand on a rocker and listen. “That’s how it should feel” he told me.
<O:p
It was time to fly. Sonny grabbed the Ol’ man’s Bomber Jacket from behind the seat and switched jackets with me. He said he was tough but not that tough. Then fired off his ride and headed toward the <ST1:pEast Bay</ST1:p.
<O:p
Sig told the Ol’ Man he would lock the place up. We left heading North up 101 to Willits then across to the coast road. I didn’t do much but I still believe it is the very best time I ever spent in a shop.

What about you?<O:p

My best time is right now. Not really a garage but a work shop (14x16). Open the door, throw on the light and radio, then look around at the beautiful mess of tools, wood and metal. It seems like the only real space i can call all mine.

One of my 2 Australian terriers always sits at the doorway gazing out, never far from the metal sparks or saw dust.

If I'm not out there every couple days doing something, be it grinding metal, drilling wood or creating some kind a racket, I just don't real right.

One of the best times I had around cars was when I was 12. My Grandpa Mac wanted to go look at a Cadillac in CO. He picked me up in Phoenix and we drove up just to look at the car. Didn’t end up getting it but the time I spent with him in the truck was the best. Got to hear all about working on airplanes and hot rods and races he was in. The best story was the one about the Hudson that he was in that went off a 75-100’ drop in CO. He was in the back seat asleep when his buddy got forced off the road. He went out the front windshield. He was cut up and the other two guys were bruised but they all survived. He was a huge fan of anything old. Loved the Hudson most.

With my Dad as a little kid. He brought me in there as soon as I could walk. I became his helper. I pretty much waited for him to say " I need a 9/16 open end" or "get me a 11/16 shortwell 3/8 socket".

I also learned the correct way to hand a tool to the mechanic so he didn't waste time. Dad worked for a freight line as a truck mechanic & they were given so much time to do a particular job. Apparently seconds added up quickly. Believe it or not this was in a union shop in Chicago. I will never forget it & I still do it today.

And of course I had the job of cleaning all the tools and putting them back where they belonged. My Ma wasn't too happy that he used gasoline to wash everything including my young hands but the tools were clean & ready to go for the next day.

My best days in the garage, I am sure are ahead of me. Those days learning from my Dad are priceless.

He brought me in, I learned & I will never leave.

Without a doubt it was the time the hot little honey from across the street came over to help me work on my car. I will leave the rest to your imagination.:D

14. For me the best time ever was the first major operation I ever did to my own car. When I was 18 a friend lent me the full run of his garage and tools so I could change the clutch in my '75 Opel wagon. It took me two days to do and when I was done I was filthy, bruised and cut up but driving it back home was a the capper to a learning experience I couldn't have matched at that point in my life.

I will say I am jealous of some of you guys all my girl neigbors are old women. My favorite time in the garage was when i was 13. I went over to one of my uncles customers house to learn how to weld. My mom dropped me off at about 8, I knocked on the door. This old man came out, he smelled like grinding metal and his skin looked like leather. He took out his torch and a mask and showed me the most beautiful weld. He then handed it over and said now its your turn. After an hour or so I was really burning the shit in. Then he sat me down and started talking about hot rods. Telling me his most memorable expierience was when this basass 32 ford coupe did a burn out out of a gas station as far as the eye could see. This story changed my life. Six months later I bought my coupe with every penny I had!

Alot of really good times with family and friends, too many to list. The best have all involved time with my pops for sure. It doesn't get any better than turning wrenches with him.

18. I have plenty of good memories working with my brother and maybe I'm spoiled with sex in the garage but the best time for me was when I built my first engine and it ran...lol

Best of times are when nothing is getting accomplished.... bunch of guys sitting in lawn chairs, beers in hand. Granted the enviroment can't get any better......

Now only if the boss would allow for oil puddles on the living room floor... cigar smoking, an air compressor running, or welding in the kitchen.... then MAYBE i would resort to leaving the 'mancave'....

Nope nevermind.

Is a drug, an addiction, an obsession, whatever. 99% of us get in that garage not to 'work' but to 'play.' It just so happens that alot of us have beer fridges in the garage.

IE I'm an engineer... I do math.

Good Buddies + Alcohol = Usually a good story or two in the morning + headache.

Not in the garage...in the front yard actually. It was a summertime Sunday, and I was trying to get my '52 Chevy 2-door ready for my first Woodward Dream Cruise. I didn't realize that the cruise ended early in the evening. My buddy Kirk and my wife Sandy were helping me. Kirk, tuning the motor, etc....Sandy, shampooing the interior, etc....me, rubbing out the paint and primer and waxing, etc. Kirk and Sandy worked their asses off with me until dark! Needless to say, we didn't make it to the cruise, and I finally said to them, "O.K. you guys...enough is enough!" We had a good time though, and as we sat watching some local fire-works and laughing over a beer and a "smoke" in the back yard, I was very very aware of how those two kind souls had blessed me with their presence that day. And it touches my heart even now. And...the Chevy sure did run, look, and smell great for a while! - Rick

I'll reverse it. I don't have many memories about my Pops and I in the garage, but I will say that the look in my sons eyes as hes learning to spin a wrench is priceless.

27. I think one of the best has to be about 1980 or so - working in the garage to get my car ready for the drags (Antique Nats) . . . had my Mom there (she always liked the hotrod stuff, Dad and friends -- tuning the car and getting ready to put it on the trailer. Just some great memories (Dad is no longer with us). The next day we all piled into the family station wagon and out to Orange County International Raceway (no longer there) - my friend Phil was there to help with the car . . . family was there in the cool-down area, etc.. Good stuff!
