I have a 49 ford f2 that I want to make a short bed, the question I have is do I have to cut any of the rear half of the frame? Also I have determined that short beds are 114, and mine is 122 so I am only taking 8 in. out of the frame in front of the wheels right!
I would take the 8 inches out of the frame directly behind the cab. You will also need a new or shortened driveshaft. If you need any other dimensions, pm me and I can measure the '51 F1 I have sitting in the garage.
I have a 50 F2 that id like to make into a shortbed also. Are you going to use the bed from a 1/2 ton or modify the F2 bed?
When you take the 8" out ahead of the rear axle, do like Frozen Merc said: "--right behind the cab". But in addition, assuming you make two straight, vertical cuts, you should "fish plate" the joint. The plate should be in the shape of an elongated diamond and most of the height of the inside of the frame channel. The shape of the plate is such that all of the welds that attach it are more horizontal than vertical. (That's the way it's done in the professional truck chassis/body shops)
Thanks for the help, so I dont have to take any off of the frame behind the wheels, just the 8 in. behind the cab. 50f3 I plan on finding a F1 shortbed, since mine is currently a flat bed. I am also keeping my big wheel arched f2 front fenders they look descent enough. Frozen merc do you have a measurement from the leaf spring hanger to the end of the frame? mine seems to be too long. when I shortened my 63 chevy I had to take 8 in. out of the back half of the frame and 12 in. in the front.
It is 12 in from the center of the lower rearmost rivet on the spring hanger to the rear of the frame.
ahh mine measures 23.5 from the rivet to the end of the frame. so it looks as though I need to take some off of the rear. thank you for the measurement
That would be the 8 ft bed versus the 6 ft bed. 12 in front of the axle and 12 in behind. Glad I could help.
hey guys. "new member" quick question. my 63 f100 also has the 122"w/b. ive heard that there are three w/b lengths. 114" and 122" for shortbed. one just a longer wheelbase, and 128" for the actual longbed. any truth to this?
heres how it turned out if anyone cares. the bed I got from a fellow hamber, and located the wrong year fenders, but i think it works.
