I took the Trans out today! What do you all think. Have teeth that are broke as you can see. I suspect that is the problem. next question do i fix or do i get a new one?
Are you going to fix it yourself? I'd probably look for another trans and/or parts. If you are going to use that transmission it might be a good idea to have some extra parts hanging around.
I would get some replacement parts and rebuild what you have. Gear boxes are real easy to work with, you don't need special tools, just an afternoon, and a little patience.
chubbie I wish. I was going to shift from 1st to 2nd and the shifter jammed. Then the trans got cought in two gears at once. I have 2nd and 3rd but no 1st and rev.
I'll buy your explaination because I wasn't there but it sure looks like the damage caused by dumping the clutch in 1st. Frank
Almost any shop or motor manual for the year and model of the transmission should have instructions to follow and they may be on the net. Getting the needle bearings to stay inside the cluster is a bit of fun but that can be dealt with. It helps if you have a large clean work bench or table where you can keep track of everything if it's your first one. Lay the pieces out in order as you take it apart and they will be easier to keep track of. Also that will help you to keep from having to crawl around on the floor looking for the missing needle bearings. No need to know why I mentioned that part though.
ha. i just finished washing one of those up today. is the cluster OK? the needle bearings are a pita. helps to have a shaft the same size as the countershaft cut to the length of the cluster. use that to hold the needle bearings in when you drive in the 'real' shaft. like the shop manual suggests.
you can do it dude! **** you got all winter to get it done and their has to be a local hamb member to help if you get stuck. as far as needle bearings go call your local oil supply guy and get a tube of pinion grease its like grease and glue mixed. i used it on large spur gears and your paint it on them. it will not come out of your clothes and when it was time to lube the gears of my veneer dryer they just paid you for a new pair of carharts.
