anyone who thinks that 34 sitting under a roof is a shame is twisted. I'm pretty sure racoons can't eat steel.

how come these stories never have the part where you offered the guy $40,000.00 cash for it and he still said no?

if I had the money and space I'd have a shitoad of old cars I may never do anything with. you people who think that is wrong are weird.

  3. It's not like that is the last 34 on the planet either.

I personally have a bunch of junk other guys think I'm letting rot too. The 67 gto I've only driven 100 miles in the last 8 years. Or my first car a 72 blazer that some guy keeps trying to buy since in his words "it's just rotting and I'm obviously never going to do anything with" I've chased him off with a shot gun...

point is....when I bought the gto it was a basket case. I have since gotten it running and driving so I can afford to keep it and restore it at a later date. But you wouldn't know that if you drive by it everyday it just sits there. Or my blazer I've rebuilt all the mechanicals, I've spent $10,000 dollars on it so far, but it's still looks exactly the same as when I bought it in 2002...old and rusty. And yes it has been sitting for a year do to electrical issues, sorry I don't have $1000 extra bucks right now for a factory harness. But I'm saving and it will get fixed. it would already be fixed but I spent $4000 dollars rebuilding the 460 in my 1979 f250...see where the money goes? I'm only 26 and starting a business so things are tight right now. but they will be fixed and I plan on dying with all 3 of them.

When I was a teenager and thought the world revolved around me, I thought people were crazy for holding on to cars till they pass.

Now that I'm alot older, I realize it's their damn car and I don't blame them for keeping it however they want.

If I had the room, I'd have a bunch of cars that would sit until I got around to doing something with them.

Just like the Hirohata merc. Looks like that came out of storage and got fixed up quite nicely!

I think the obvious part people are leaving out is they think they 'deserve' to buy the car CHEAPLY from the owner.

If someone doesn't want to sell their car, big deal, go find someone who does and pay them for it.

  5. Or don't wait and do that now. Money talks. I bet if people walked up to people with cash like that a lot of these "rotting jewels" would be freed up.

I guess I must be a dick too, I have a few cars in my shop, some I'm not doing anything with and no, they're not for sale. I'm sure I'm not the only one on here in that situation.
The 34 is out of the weather and obviously the owner likes the car enough not to sell it. I don't see a damn shame here at all and I don't think he's a dick for not selling it.
Maybe you feel you should be able to take peoples cars if you judge them not worthy.

I'll agree. If people wanted to give the market value for some of these instead of trying to get them for "I'll haul it off for you.", then they would probably change hands. I'm sure some of the cars that "aren't for sale" could be bought, they're "not for sale" because the owners are tired of listening the sound of whistlebutts. Most of the folks that own these cars know what they're worth.

Guys, I know this owner of these 3 vehicles. I have it on good authority that his Granddaughter has submitted all 3 to the show Pimp My Ride and is really awaiting the filming. These vehicles will be taken care of!

My gripe with these people is not that they won't sell them..its theirs, but one day you drive by, and they sold it for pratically nothing, like the old wrecking yard south of Altus Ok.. the old man died, and the son sold it ALL for junk iron prices to the crusher..

There's an elderly couple in my town with a very large warehouse filled, and I mean FILLED, as in stacked one atop the other, with their old cars and trucks. I offered the gentleman really stupid high money for one of his 47 Ford pickups that's all ratty. He wouldn't sell. He says they all belonged to various family members at some point in history, and he won't sell any of them. Some day, it'll make for a fantastic estate sale. I keep watching the obits, and I'll let you know when the auction will be held.......maybe. :)

    Pete,
That's where Larry Crane's 38 came from. He had that stuff for sale for a couple of years and no one bought much of it (except the musclecar stuff went pretty quick). I walked the place out 2 or 3 times, not much that was really anything you'd want.

    .........okay, I read your response. I think you are talking about entitlement, but just want to put another lable on it, and wrong for the following reasons;

Old iron isn't just for the restoring business. It's also for people to posess. Possession of property is more important, more basic, to me than my right to engage in business. Whether it's a kid, that starts on it today, and don't finish it for seventy years, keeps it in his garage out of sight, don't even post on the HAMB, or an old guy that keeps it just for the sake of having it, whether they sell it, or restore it, OR NOT. If the old guy has it, and whether he looks at it only once every ten years, if that satisfies him, or if he choses to give it away, or crush it, then that's okay with me, because guess what? It's his.

10-4 Artfrombama, I think they said Feb. 30 this episode will air.

  16. How is it there's so many guys bitching about this guy's cars and yet I can have between me and a buddy 300 cars all very buyable and can't sell a fucking one of them?

Yeah, there's no '34 Fords, at least not this week, and they're not all in as nice of shape, but every one has a price on it. And they're not all pieces of shit, either.

I hope the guy keeps it until the barn falls down on it, I really do, because it's obvious the ones complaining are just pissed they can't steal it away for $500 - or in the one post, literally steal it. For a New York car, the thing is like being in mint condition. It has paint on it, and it's under cover. If that makes him happy, so be it, it's his car to do whatever he wants to - let it sit and house raccoons, have it crushed into a 3x3 cube, perform indecent acts with sheep inside it... whatever. If you don't agree with that.. too bad.

Well, except for the sheep thing.

^ RNYer- agreed. With all the love expressed for Hemis', you'd think a pair advertised here would at least get some 'valve cover' kickers.

I agree with those who've said, "People can do what they want". And according to Bullrack, there's a plan.

But there's something that hasn't been mentioned here...sentimental value. Imagine having traveled endless miles on countless adventures with your sweet wife...then she dies. You'd probably find it difficult to sell the old buggy that you shared so many memories in with your life-long love. For many of these old folks, these cars represent better, happier times in their life...a time when they were young as you are. One day, you young guys are gonna be old and feeble and alone with only memories. You too will certainly keep something to help you to remember...and you won't sell it for a million bucks. Some things are worth more than money. You'll see. - Rick

I completely agree with this. My dad's a perfect example, he's had his galaxie since he was 15, and all through college it sat outside, and then once married it sat outside uncovered for 20 years after that. Now its got a new motor since it was one of our father son projects. Still hasn't touched the body or the inside, which is falling apart. My dad kept it because it was one of the last things his dad gave him. He was offered very decent money while trying to make ends meet freshly out of college and paying for my mom to go to college and still wouldn't sell. For some people, like mentioned earlier, its about having the car and the memories you have from it and not that its fully restored or a hotrod in your garage. My dad can tell a story about each part of the car, even down to the trailer hitch on it which was from when he raced quarter midgets and my grandpa and him would tow them around the portland area and as far as colorado to race.

For you folks that think it's wrong to hang onto old iron, I have a question: do you have any old vehicles sitting on your property, doing nothing? If you do, why aren't YOU selling them?
