I had an old timer tell me that he once bolted brake off a 56 F-100right on to model "A" spindles, has anyone heard of this? Does it work?
I'm not sure about the f100 but I bolted a set of 48s right on to mine ...no sweat .I do believe the 53 54 f100 are the same as the 48
Yes, the bolt pattern is the same, but the hubs, backing plates and drums are different. I believe it is Speedway that makes a bearing kit that is designed to adapt F1 (1948-1952) brakes to 1940 spindles. I know that F1 and F100 front drums are different but the shoes are the same. I do not know if the hubs are the same or not. If the kit will adapt F100 hubs to 1940 spindles, it will work on Model A spindles. That being said, if you are building a hot rod most people use 1940 style spindles (or the later squarebacks) due to them being a bit stronger. Hope that helps! -Rob
Here's a thread on F-100 brakes on 37-48 spindles, with bearing part #s and everything: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5877 Not sure about Model A spindles though...
if you are going to put them on model A spindles AT LEAST change the kingpins and bushings to the later solid style, this will also give you more clearance for the wheel cylinder. also, you are going to be running the ball style tie rod ends, make sure those are cleaned and fresh grease put in.
