I just completed installation of a 40 Ford rear axle into my 29 AV8. I did lots of reading on the Hamb regarding ways to shorten the driveshaft and torque tube and decided to go with the simple and cheap method of cutting and welding. I figured I needed to find out right away if my welding would hold. Here's a link to a crummy video of my (sort of) hard launch with the new parts. 'Course the engine is just a stock 40 Merc flatty with a lumpy cam. Good news is that it all held together! My 1-2 shift was pretty sloppy but 'cause I'm still getting use to the three-on-the-tree. I took lots of picks of the cutting and welding and will post them when I get time. Dan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyjFmGasQfk
I've just done this too. I used the method Koz put up a while back, where you cut the shaft, grind new splines with an angle grinder, push the coupler on and weld it in place.
I'm with you, F1. Gotta do the stress-test. If it's gonna break, it's gonna break right now! Hahahahaha! Cool roadster too. - Rick
Thanks for the encouragement. The exhause is just cast iron manifolds and straight pipes. Pretty crude but it sure does sound nice. Not sure if I can get away with it on the street but I think I'm gonna try.
Dan, Looks and sounds sweet. I've seen all the work you've done yourself on this thing. It's definately come a long way from the ol' non-running barnyard stocker it was a year or two ago. Mike
