I just bought a new Socal Speed Shop 4" forged dropped axle for my Model A. I was just mocking the new spring and perches up with no problems. I go to put my spindles and new king pins in place only to find the kingpins DO NOT even come close to fitting into the bosses on the axle. I know I need to ream/hone my spindle bushings, but should it be necessary to ream the axle to get them to fit? I've sent an email off to Socal to see what they say, but I'm curious if anyone else has run into this problem.

    Thanks,

The kingpin should fit snuggly into the axle boss. So Cals axle's are made in China. Buyer beware. The FOGGER

  3. Dealt with two of them so far.

The king pin boss is larger in diameter than an OG Ford or other aftermarket axle. This causes a problem with stock spindles, they need to be clearanced to fit.

Both had good bores for the king pins though, the lock holes are a bit random causing headaches trying to make everything match up. On axle in particular the lock pin would pull all the way through on, it needed to be shimmed up almost 0.090" to even start to wedge in.

Is there a chance you have oversized pins?

Chassis Eng. have a forged axle too, can anyone confirm their origins, and whether they are a good product. I will be looking for a forged repro 4" drop axle on my USA shopping trip early next year.

  5. Unless they changed recently, CE had their axles forged at the John Deere mfg plant in Iowa.

Of the last 5 cars I've built three have had Chassis Engineering axles, the other two were Ford heavy beams. I have not had to adjust camber or caster on the CE axles. I have a replacement CE axle on my '32 3W, the first one was bent after my car was hit head on by a Dodge van. The axle bent but didn't break or crack. I like the CE axles for full fendered cars because they are narrower and allow the front end to be lower and still have tire to fender clearance. They offer a great made in the USA product. Nope, my kingpins are stock size and they fit my original bushings that are still in my spindles.

  11. I use a SoCal axle with my Speedway spindes.
Had some paint inside after powdercoating.
I just reamed them with a 13/16 reamer, no problem...

I just built a chassis for my 32 PU and used the So-Cal axle with stock 39/40 spindles and had no problems. I like the way the thing turns lock to lock with no spindle arm interference!

Did you ever get things straightened out with SOCAL? I would like to buy one of their axles also, but don't need any more problems than I already have.

  14. Another vote for CE. Why buy SoCal made in china when you can buy CE made in USA? My CE is great, everything fitted just fine.

I had the same problem. SoCal Long beach sold me axle and king pins, got home and pins didnt fit in axle.Long beach sent me to pomona and they took care of me there. they re bushed my spindles to fit the new socal king pins i had to buy.Dont know what brand the first pins were. My problem is that the arms hit the axle before the stops. Any suggestions ?
