I think the problem might be that it is about 12 years too new.

    For this site.

Low idle speed or timing being off would be my thoughts. And you did say that the engine was going in your hotrod one of these days didn't you??

Possibly a bad torque converter as well.

  6. I have to agree with MarkzRodz. Its sucking vacuum somewhere. Either a bad center head gasket, or a hole in the power brake vacuum diaphragm are two places to start looking.

Could be a vacuum leak, or it could be timing off really far. Balancer spun on my 383. When I set TDC by the balancer and started it, it started and idled fine. But as soon as I put it in gear, it would die. Turns out it was 20 degrees retarded. Set TDC by feeling #1 with a screwdriver, remarked the balancer, reset timing and have driven it with no issues since

Not enough base timing, or you have your vacuum can plugged into the wrong port on the carb.

plug a vacuum gauge up and time it with that. you will also see if it has a leak or not. advance it to be the highest vacuum level then drop it 1 inch of Hg and should be good.

It's good that you are trying to fix the problem before removing it from the donor vehicle; otherwise this would be entirely off-topic.
