I've want to install these Rajah ends for my spark plug wires and I know I have to solder them. Anyone done these before? Can you show me pics of finished product? I know I need to strip off 1/4 inch of insulation and insert wire in Rajah as shown in pics. But when it comes to soldering, do I bend the excess wire over then solder... or solder while straight and then clip off excess...? Probably would work either way I do it but I kinda want to do it the correct way. figure a couple of you guys have done it a bunch of times. Thanks for your advise.
I haven't done it in a long time but we used to bend the wire and shove the end back into the hole, flatten it and then solder. It gives you a nice little nub of solder and holds well.
I would untwist the strands and fold them back over the end. Cutting them so that they don't stick out wider than the terminal. Then solder them on the end to get a smooth ****on of solder on the end with the strands buried underneath. I think it will give a cleaner look than the wire coming through the solder and clipped off. JMHO
I have an original Rajah tool...it crimps the sleeve into the insulation to secure the thing (soldering the wire really can't do that part adequately) and has a cutter that cuts the insulation off of the wire to correct length, which is approximately realdamnshort. From that dimension, my ***umption was that they wanted the nubbin of wire fanned out 360 and soldered all around. Or maybe that depthing cutter is only for the screw ons, which need only a short wire for the screw prong to mash outward...I've only actually used the screw types, myself, since they are reusable. Call up Brillman...they sell a large line of Rajahs and likely know the original intent for the soldering. Any of the ways suggested should work, but I'm sure there's an original way, which might well just be bend over inside the sleeve and do the 360 crimp!
Bruce, I been searching for the crimping tool.... is this it? Towards the bottom of the page: http://www.westwoodproducts.com/images/cat__section_t.pdf Thanks
Holy Cow! I had no idea a relacement was available. The crimping jaws I think are identical to the actual Rajah. The tool itself is entirely different, as the Rajah was purpose made and not adapted to linesman pliers frame, but that should be an entirely good Rjah crimper. Rajahs are indeed commonly used for burner igniters. The old tool had a special shallow cutter to strip a short section of wire and the crimper part was on the other side of the pivot. I have two, one stamped "1959"...the other is missing one of the jaw pieces within the crimper...wonder if parts are available from that new one??
