Has anyone ever had problems with fibergl*** resin causing ill health effects? i was molding a piece for the dash in the off topic, making a broken piece, and I've never been hit with this stuff like this. I've been making fibergl*** stuff for years, Stupid didn't wear a respirator this time. Just feel dizzy and lightheaded, have been this way for several hours now, Had the doors wide open on the garage, and working right near the doors, Are they putting something different in the resin now? maby because of the EPA? any ideas for an antidote? chemicals usually don't bother me.

Call the poison control center at your local hospital right now. They will be able to advise you.

Hey go to the er or doctor ,I was playing with fibergl*** last night and no problem.Could be an underlying health problem ,Blood pressure comes to mind...Im not a doctor But I think it might be a good idea.I don't want to be reading about you on the hamb......

  4. I was knee deep in fibergl*** for the better part of 45 years and never had anything like you are talking about. Over the years we probebly had over 100 employies during that period and none of them had problems.
    Follow the advise above.

I don't care what you were doing before this happened... if you have felt dizzy and light headed for HOURS go to the hospital RIGHT NOW........

It could be nothing, it could be something VERY SERIOUS!!!!

Get the hell off the internet and go to the hospital NOW...

isocyanite is now being added to the catalyst, less VOC.

It is called VOCs "volital organic compounds" and yes the EPA has new regulations for manufactureres which require either va***e infusion or closed moulding of composites. it is always best to use in a well ventlated area or use a respirator when applying resin.

all right as soon as my wife gets home i'll have her take me to tifton, the hospital here will kill you, or make you worse. I've been working with this stuff for years too with no effects and never anything like this. I normally use genuine duct tape as a mold base, the stuff won't stick to it, and this **** ate right through it. could be isocyanites in it they have added.

I had those symptoms occur a while back. Went to the doctor and found out I had developed Vertigo. Doc gave me some medicine to take and said it will go away on its own. Good luck, hope it isn't anything more serious.

isocyantes are bad news, an a***ulative poison.

bad to get it on your skin as well. wear gloves as well as the resperator and have a well vented area

i have never heard of iso's being in resin before, but sounds like they have made it more dangerous trying to make it safer..........

Glad to hear you are OK. And good advice to go to the ER and get it checked out. Same deal here, 5 miles to the band-aid hospital or 30 minutes to the real hospital.

Going to work on a O/T project (boat) during the winter. Will be doing a bit of fibergl*** work.

What kind of respirator do you use for fibergl*** resin?

    Thanks

Fax the resin maker and ask for a msds sheet. It will tell you what is in it and any ill effects it can have on you.

I normally wear a binks with dual cartridges, same as you would wear for paint. The doctor said I could be getting sensitized to the chemicals, been making stuff out of gl*** since I was a teenager.

That could be it. My understanding is that most two part compounds are sensitizers. Even epoxys, silicones, and other resins that don't contain isocyanates.

You can use them over and over for years and never have a problem then all of a sudden you have a reaction. From then on you are sensitive to them. Once you have a reaction you will most likely have one each time you are exposed. They can also make you sensitive to other chemicals.

  26. That stuff is bad.

    Always keep everything well vented.

Years ago (different formula you say?) it would give you an upset stomach if you breathed it too much.

Just to illustrate how bad the smell and vapors can get- I was doing some fibergl*** work for a custom shower installation. I had to keep a fresh air fan going on high all the time or the skin on my arms, face, and neck would feel like the skin was peeling. Fumes in a small room.
Someone brought in some lunch and a bag of potato chips. We stopped for lunch, but did not open the chips.
Later on I brought the unopened chips home. When I opened the bag and tried some chips, they tasted like fibergl***. I couldn't eat them.
I asked some friends who were over at the time to taste the chips. No one could eat them. The resin smells went right through the sealed bag and made the chips inedible just from being near the work area for a couple hours.

One time I found that a possum had made a home in my storage shed. The possum had babies and would not let me in the shed. Bared teeth, hissing and all that stuff. I put some fibergl*** resin on a paper towel and set it on a dinner plate. I put the dinner plate inside the door of the shed and closed the door. The possums had moved out when I checked back in the evening. Usually they are hard to get rid of after they settle in, but not this time.

thanks for the support guys, still have a bad cough and a terrible headache, i'm watching it very carefully. I guess the lesson is, it's not like in the old days where you could get away with occasionally not wearing one. I was kind of raised that way, even though i'm usually pretty careful. NAAA it won't hurt you, and one day it bites ya in the ***.

If you do get the Data Sheet would you post the results here. I can't believe that they're putting Isocynates in the fibergl***. I've built up some levels of 'em, and some solvents make me run. The worst one is the fumes from Acid Primer. I ***ume it's (Iso's)are in the hardener.

i'll try to get one from them, doc is the one who told me it probably had them, i believe it's on the can too. I had a splitting headache yesterday from this so i'm trying to remember. I don't want to go out there right now until some of the fumes dissipate from my shop.

  30. I checked with Fibergl*** Frank Morawski about this last night. He said isocynates have been in polyester resins for years.
When I worked at Eastwood, the folks from POR 15 wanted to have us sell it. Once the owner, Curt Strohacker saw there were isocynates in the stuff, he told them no, not ever.
