Hey all I have been using this site for a year or so but never needed to post anything. I recently built a 51 chevy on an S10 chassis and rebuilt an old teardrop camper that me and my new wife just took on our honeymoon. We took Route 66 from KS to CA went up the coast into OR and back home.
looks nice.im sorry it looks great.man would i love to be able to go on a trip like that,i bet it was a blast.
Welcome from Vassar(a hoot and holler away) Ks. Sweet truck and to me there is no better trip than running up the coast. I've only done it from San Fransisco going north. Another cool trip is Bonneville for speed week. Tell us more about your build please. Eric
Cool truck. my buddy just got a 52 styline we're getting ready to do a frame and driveline swap on. welcome from redneckville, indiana!
Little about the build, This is my first build of this type. I proposed to my wife in Sept of 2008 we set our wedding date of Oct 10th 2009. As we discuss the wedding plans we get to talking about the honeymoon and I came up with the great Idea of building an old truck and driving it half way across the country. Having no idea that she would actually let me. So it began I found a 100 dollar s10 when I went to pick it up he had an 07 5.3 LS motor on a stand in his garage he was going to put in the POS S10 I had just bought. I passed on the motor and went on to find a 51 that was all there with a fairly decent cab. So then I was looking for a motor all the while still trying to map out our trip the more I thought about it I wanted to get good MPG and needed to be able to get parts easily so I went with the 5.3 (I know most people on this board arent for it but luckily its mine and I don't have to care.) it had the Tranny and the computer had already been reprogrammed for the S10 rear end. By this time it was about Jan only 9 months left and one morning while I was looking through CL for truck parts I came across a teardrop camper that was screaming my name so I took off the rest of the day of work and went to get it. I figured I could build it also I mean I had 9 months left. I got the camper home and set it on the back burner. I went on to do a bunch of body work that took a couple of months cause I had no idea how to do it. But I got through then I started on the camper because we wanted to take it on a float trip in the end of July so I spent a month almost 2 cutting out rust, replacing the floor putting in windows everything as when I got it had been a wood shed for 25 plus years. My dad built the cabinets and sent it back to me to finish them (I will attach pics). I had spent way to much time on the camper and body work it was time to get this thing put together I had planned on making my own mounts but it was taking way to long so I found a guy here in the KC area that should chassis swap kits for this application a member of The KC truck club went and picked the kit up for me and we were off to the races a great kit to say the least... I painted the truck flat black and used implement paint for the fenders and dash seeing as how we always had Massey Fergusson when I was a kid and to this day. I painted the fenders I built on the camper to match. long story short I didnt get the bed even mocked up till my bachelor party 2 weeks before the wedding but somehow it all came together and we were able to do a burn out into the reception hall (A big barn) we hit the road with only a couple of hick-ups. And allot of paint chips...
Very cool! Welcome from the home of Dwight D. Eisenhower and the end of the Chisolm Trail. Keep an eye out for the Annual Mid-West HAMB-b-q in April.
