ID what this starter came from?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alden, Dec 2, 2009.

  1. My 1959 Apache with the 235 came with this starter and I'm trying to figure out what it came from. It's definitely not original as it isn't setup for a foot start (was wired for a button on the dash). Any idea what it came from? I'm trying to rewire to just using the key to start it but would like to know exactly what I'm working with.

    thanks!

yep...looks like the starter that came with the 235 I put in my 50 coupe when I swapped out the 216. Came out of a 59.

  4. I'm really unfamiliar with the intricacies of classics having unfortunately grown up a few decades too late and not having any car nuts in the family so please excuse my ignorance: Were these cars (the sedans etc, not my Apache) originally setup to use the key to start or did the 58-62's use foot or button starting systems as well?

trucks had floor pedal start on 6 cylinder models with standard transmission thru 59, cars got electric pushbutton starters around 49? and key start a few years later.

  7. gocha, so were the pushbutton and key start setups utilizing the same starters (just with the button as an interrupt)?

  8. haha thanks, nice way to put a positive spin on it!

  9. one more followup question for the incredibly dumb (i.e. me). If I was to need to replace this starter, when I head on down to the local parts store what year/model could I tell them I need since it's not original to my truck?

  10. Don't be so hard on yourself. You think these guys that have all this info never asked a question. Someone once said there were no dumb questions dumb only if you don't ask. Something like that. Your truck is 12v so most any 12v 235 starter should work.

    1955 thru 1962

I'd try 58 thru 62 car with 235 like I said in my post above (that's why I said that too).

The earlier ones used a different style solenoid I think. bolted to the motor part instead of the nose part. I think...but it's been a while...

I'd just leave the push button and be done with it unless you have something against push buttons. You can always hide it right under the dash so that you can hit it with your fingertip if you don't want it to show. Nice anti theft thing that way too. It may not keep someone from stealing the truck but it will keep them from jumping in it and driving off at the gas pump if you happen to leave the key in the switch.

  13. rereading this i did state the 55-62 235 starter. that was an error on my fingers part. the bran sent the messege and the finger did a bad. sorry for giving you wrong info

  14. I wouldn't be so hard on myself if I hadn't crossed up the wires on my starter and potentially fried my brand new harness yesterday :(

Hopefully nothing will be shot, but I still have a lot of wiring to test for shorts now.

    Thanks all for the responses!
